DS Fanboy community project: Muxtape

This may be a little off the beaten path, but we here at DS Fanboy stumbled across the DIY-online-mixtape site, muxtape, recently, and we've had a lot of fun putting together and sharing our creations. So much fun, in fact, that we decided to try to bring everyone in on it. By everyone, we mean you, our beloved readers. Create (if you haven't already) your own muxtape and share it in the comments!

We've created two for you to enjoy:
  • DJFanboy: game and game-inspired music
  • DJFanboy2: a selection of blogger favorites -- get to know us better!
And you know there's some Ace Attorney music represented. Take your objections to that one elsewhere!

Pentagon wants to make a supercomputer out of a Game Boy

The new program is called STAP-BOY (space-time adaptive processing) and the goal is to turn "any Soldier, any Marine [into] an advanced sensor platform." To do this, the military is looking to take "commercial Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) hardware and software of the type currently used for fast geometry computations in hand-held electronic games like Nintendo's GAME BOY," gifting soldiers in the field with a "technique that enhances the ability of radars to detect targets that might otherwise be obscured." Right now, this can only be done by the most advanced of supercomputers.

As of now, Darpa figures it'll be ready to hand the project over to the Army by the end of 2008. Personally, we wouldn't want to be the guy in charge of using the gizmo, since we're sure we'd just play Tetris on the thing.

Introducing the amazing Game Boy PC

It's amazing what people are turning into computers these days, as this original Game Boy has become the case for one of the smallest Windows XP PCs we've ever seen. Complete with 2 USB ports, LAN and VGA outputs, the cartridge slot has even been turned into a Compact Flash drive. This thing is sick!

Who's ready to try and cram one into a DS Lite?

DS Daily: What if ...

What if import games were available in random stores, and therefore much easier to obtain? Some people have been lucky enough to catch import games at their local Best Buys; we've had a number of tipsters clue us in to this fact. If you happen to be there on the day, you too might have a chance at Jump Ultimate Stars or Minna no DS Curling... but would you be willing? We figure it's safe to assume that most of you don't read Japanese. We hear it may be a little tough. But how much does the text matter in some games? Enough to keep you from trying one out if it was as easy as a quick car trip?

We'll say one thing: we're not sure about a text-heavy Japanese game, but we'd already be in line if we so much as heard a whisper about imported DS Lites in local store. Oh, Enamel Navy, where are you?

Powerpuff Girls adapted to anime, anime adapted to minigames

This news manages to be both supremely weird and completely banal at the same time. It's interesting conceptually, but mechanically, it's another licensed minigame set. Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z is the made-for-Japan adaptation of the Cartoon Network show, which was itself inspired by anime.

And just like you would expect for any anime, or, for that matter, anything popular in Japan (see also: food and walking) Powerpuff Girls Z is getting its own DS game. This has to be the most derivative game ever in terms of source material-- just surpassing the game adaptation of Street Fighter: The Movie.

Game Boy musical teaches addict a lesson

One of the most unlikely places one would find gaming, or gaming addiction rather, would be on Broadway. Alas, that is where this story takes place, as The Game Boy, Matthew Gandolfo and Robin Rothstein's musical, focuses on Chase, a guy who finds himself deeply in love with his Game Boy. This addiction, of course, interferes with his life as the musical shows us just how his love of the handheld fuels his desire to be the best of the best.

Eventually, this desire leads to a life of solitude and sadness, as Chase's adventures are documented in the video, available past the post break.

Poll results: Is the Game Boy dead?

It would appear that, according to the DS Fanboy community at least, the Game Boy is officially dead. We can't remember the last GBA game we purchased or looked forward to, so we'd have to agree. This could bode well for thoseof us with the thrifty gamer's eye, however, as the GBA fades away, its games will be available in clearance bins in our local brick-and-mortar outlets and online sales. Now's the time to pick up some of those stellar GBA games we missed, wouldn't you say?

UK retailer celebrates Brain Awareness week with Brain Age deal

Did you know this week was Brain Awareness week? Neither did we, which might say something about the current state of our brain (see: mush). As part of this week's focus on the brain and the wonderful things it can do, UK retailer GAME is selling some bundles, along with a few games, at a discount to help you get the most out of that wrinkled little guy that rests snugly within your skull.

The deals offered include the pink and onyx DS Lites, bundled with Brain Training (Brain Age for us Americans) at a discounted price. Also up for grabs are Big Brain Academy, as well as Brain Training by itself, allowing those of you who already have a DS Lite (as you should) to still get in on the action.

Poll: Is the Game Boy dead?

With the latest release schedule that Nintendo dished out, we all noticed a severe lack of Game Boy Advance games. So, we figured we'd ask you guys where you stand with the GBA. Could you care less or are you still actively purchasing and playing GBA games?

Should the Game Boy be buried?
Yes, there's no life left in that system; the DS is way better
No, the Game Boy has plenty of life left in it and I want to see more games!

DS Daily: Guilty pleasures

You know what we're talking about. Everyone has that game that they just absolutely love that their friends don't quite understand. Maybe you're surrounded by Madden fans, but you just can't get enough of Super Princess Peach. Maybe you love Pokemon, even though everyone you know thinks it's silly. Sometimes, you love something so much that you just don't care what anyone thinks. What is it for you?

DS Daily: The democratic process

Well, it looks like the next Presidential campaign is already well under way in the good ol' U.S. of A., so it must be time for us to ask a preliminary election question: how big is the issue of videogame legislation to you? For those of you who will be voting, is this one of of your major issues when evaluating candidates? In a time of war, this may seem like a small issue to some, but it's one that affects us pretty much every day. So, what we want to know is how you feel about candidates who support heavier regulation of video game content?

New DS Lite stand is bendy

We thought we didn't like DS Lite stands that much. We were so, so wrong. It turns out we were just waiting for this one to come along and make our DS look more like an IKEA lamp. Where those other stands use ridiculous hinges and rectangular bases to sit on your table*, or magnets to stick to surfaces, the Game Stand Lite uses two real, proven scientific principles which naturally increase awesomeness:
  1. a big bendy arm, and
  2. a suction cup
We don't think it comes with that transparent base, which is too bad. We like transparent things almost as much as we like bendy things. We do hope that suction cup is strong enough to stand up to the force of a few songs' worth of rhythm-action.

*Okay, so there's a hinged stand in the linked GAME Watch accessory roundup that's actually really nice, if significantly less bendy.

The DS iPod mod paves way for iBoy

First the DS gets turned into an iPod, now flickr user sirljohns has managed to transform the original Game Boy into an iPod, effectionately calling it the iBoy. The folks responsible for the DS mod provided a video, something which sirljohns did not do, so we cannot comment on which has the better functionality. However, the geek-cred that comes from lugging the OG handheld itself around is something that one cannot easily ignore.

Anyone interested in doing this to their old Game Boy?

Tiny hotness: playing the Wii on a GBA SP (update 1)

In using a special cartridge that allows a video signal to be sent to the GBA, You Tube user jackal27 rocks his Wii on the portable's tiny screen. Obviously, the practical use of such a feature is almost nonexistent, but it makes for a fun little You Tube video. Check out the video, which has been embedded past the post break.

Update: me am not so English good (I omitted a word or two in the post).

A different approach to cartridge storage

When we conducted our daily perusal of poppa site Joystiq, we were intrigued by the above image. A DS cartridge case that allows one to hold up to 4 DS game cartridges and one GBA game cartridge. The case is Shogakukan's Hyper Carrying Case, available to Japanese consumers for a cool ¥480 (or roughly $4 USD). Do not be fooled by the wonderful graphic on the front of the case though. Inside there are no Mega Man games.
