Japan gets a chance to bag this legendary Pokemon

Japanese gamers will soon have a chance to catch the elusive Shaymin (Sheimi in Japan), a legendary Pokemon introduced in Diamond and Pearl. Unless you've been cheating, all you Pokephiles are probably drooling all over yourselves right now. The only way to catch this little guy legitimately, after all, is to get an Oak's Letter from an event sponsored by Nintendo.

Just as Darkrai was offered up to Pokemaniacs during a screening of the Darkrai-based movie, the same will be happening with Shaymin this summer for the eleventh Pokemon film (Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin). Don't fret too much if you live outside of Japan, though. Toys R Us will be offering Darkrai to shoppers during the month of June, so it's definitely possibly that Shaymin will make his way over here at some point, too.

Get your Pokemons for cheap at Circuit City

Circuit City seems to be the place to go for cheap Pokemon games this week. While a few stores are offering Pokemon related deals to celebrate the release of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, Circuit City has some of the better ones that we've seen.

The best deal is Pokemon Emerald for the GBA, which the retailer is offering for $14.99. If you want something more modern, though, you could pick up either Diamond or Pearl, which are marked down to $24.99 for the week. Also, if your sights are set on one of the Mystery Dungeon games, purchasing one at Circuit City will net you a free Pokemon action figure. Unfortunately, we don't know what these figures look like, but since they're free with the purchase, we're not all that concerned.

The best part is that these deals are offered online at CircuitCity.com, too, so you don't have to actually leave the comfort of your own home and, you know, socialize.

Pokemon Day celebrated at Yankee Stadium

While we find our alliances align themselves toward a different baseball team, it's always nice to see our obsessions getting along. Celebrating the release of Pokemon Diamond & Pearl at Yankee Stadium yesterday, fans under the age of 14 received a free Pokemon t-shirt. Usually, freebies at baseball games are sponsored, with that sponsor's logo all over what it is (free hats are often ruined that way), but with Nintendo sponsoring their own product here, we're sure those shirts are probably pretty sweet.

Did you get one? Take a picture and send it in to us!

DS Fanboy presents: Game Night 4/26/07 aftermath

Last night's Game Night session was full of Poke-fever, much as we expected. Everyone talking about their line-ups and discussing the things they like and dislike about the game. Some of us, however, were a bit under the weather and couldn't last the duration. We did see enough to know that you're probably wanting to play Pokemon Diamond & Pearl again next week, so we're just going to go ahead and declare it:

Next week's Game Night game is Pokemon Diamond & Pearl

We'll see you there for some battling action!

Diamond and Pearl sell a million in 5 days

As if anyone didn't see this coming, Nintendo fired off a press release today declaring Pokemon Diamond & Pearl have together sold a million copies in the United States. This comes only five days after the game's release on Sunday, showing that even though the franchise has been around for awhile, it is still alive and kicking. This time period in which the game has sold is only rivaled by the franchise's first title launching in the U.S. almost a decade ago.

Pokemon pokes fun at Sony

We can't say we've encountered this for ourselves yet, but apparently it's in the game. Whether it's a joke at Sony's expense or not, we're laughing all the same. Now, if only that trainer used Krabby ...

Metareview: Pokemon Diamond & Pearl

They may have been going nuts for the game in Japan when it released, but how is it being received in the United States? Well, the critics had some wonderful things to say about the game. We would provide our two cents, but we have yet to receive ours from Nintendo, so until then we'll just sit in our desk chair, spinning wildly and screaming obscenities until our overlords come into our cubicle and give us a shot of sleep juice.

Without further ado, let's check what the critics said:
  • Nintendo World Report (90/100) is of the mind that even though it resembles previous games, it's still quite good: "An extremely well conceived game. While some may complain that it is too much like past titles, it's hard not to get drawn into the charm and depth of the universe."
  • IGN (85/100) says the game has plenty of depth: "Tons of strategic depth and gameplay that's incredibly rewarding; it's one of those games that offers an enormous sense of accomplishment for even the littlest things performed. And the touch screen functions of the Nintendo DS help move things faster and easier with simple navigation menus."
  • 1UP (85/100) thinks the most important thing is refinement: "The differences between Diamond and Pearl and their predecessors are small, but they add up. Refinement is paramount here -- refined balance of battle skills, refined relationships between monster types -- as is expansion."
  • GameDaily (80/100) finds the game's worth is in the online battling: "Although the single-player quests might invoke a sense of deja vu, Pokemon enthusiasts will love the brand new story and other small tweaks added to the game. The new online battles, however, make this a Pokemon essential for anyone's -- fanboy or not -- DS collection."

Retailers breaking street date for Pokemon Diamond & Pearl?

Reader blutrane wrote in to us to tell of his local game retail spot, GameBuzz, selling him a copy of Pokemon Pearl early. The store, which is located in Montreal, is apparently breaking the street date on the game, however upon checking their website, you can see the game is only available for pre-order. Also, without blutrane providing any pictures, we understand if you, fine reader, aren't willing to swallow all of this.

Have any of you seen a retailer breaking street date on Pokemon Diamond & Pearl? Have you seen them break street date on another game? Be sure to let us know!

Pokemon pack-ins

It seems that limited edition DS Lites aren't the only thing designed to get gamers in Japan excited for Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. These exclusive keychain things are available to the first one hundred gamers who pick up either title at select retail spots in Japan. Gotta catch 'em all, amirite?
