A day on the Game Center CX set

Brian Ashcraft went to the Bandai Namco offices to witness the pain of Shinya Arino, the tortured host of the Japanese TV show Game Center CX, soon to be a DS game from the same company. The game is about kids playing fake retro games; the show is about one guy playing real retro games all the way through, even if-- especially if-- they're senselessly difficult. During the show Ashcraft visited, Arino tried his best and failed to complete the Tower of Druaga prequel The Quest of Ki. We would not like to be filmed trying to play The Quest of Ki.

The feature, much of which is contained in the photo gallery, describes a normal day on the set of the show, as Arino spends the entire day trying to finish this game, getting covert tips from Namco staffers, applying cooling pads to his forehead to stay alert, and facing the constant danger of failure. Will the games in the DS adaptation be as hard as the real thing? Will we be expected to suffer?

We have an ulterior motive for posting about Game Center CX. We continually hope that our posts about the show will convince someone at one of the companies who localizes and releases anime to pick up the license for this show and subtitle it in English. We'd totally buy the DVDs, and that's not something we can say for any current anime offerings! And then, in this hypothetical ideal universe we've built up, a localized version of the DS game could come out!

Nintendo dusts off their TV tuner accessory

First seen back in February of last year, the DS TV tuner accessory kind of disappeared. Now that it's back and Nintendo is actually planning to release it, the DS is a very different system. The DS Lite was being shown off at the same conference as the TV tuner, yet to become the massive cultural phenomenon that nobody expected it to be. New Super Mario Bros. had yet to be released; the first Brain Training game was out and selling well, but not ridiculously well. Maybe Nintendo just got busy and forgot about the accessory.

It's back now, and it has a firm release date of November 20th. If you have access to the 1seg digital audio/video broadcast system (which means you live in Japan), you can use this device to receive programming! You can also write notes and save them, which can be useful for sports scores. Nintendo will be selling this exclusively online for 6,800 yen ($59), and preorders start November 8th.

The sudden resurgence of this accessory was predicted by the Japanese magazine Gamelabo, whose predictions are usually not worth caring about. However, since this one turned out to be true, it may bode well for the other rumors they mongered in that issue: a new Square Enix RPG for DS starring Shonen Jump characters, and a PSP version of Dragon Quest IX. Or it could be that Gamelabo has a strict lies:truth ratio they have to keep up.

Lightsabers and light math: The Frogman Show DS

The Frogman Show: Datte, Shoganaijanai is based on a Japanese cartoon made in Flash, which is so popular that it's been adapted into a movie. And now it's being adapted into a DS game!

Amazingly, the show seems to be animated by just one guy (called "Frogman") who draws and writes everything. We're pretty sure other people (developer Compile Heart) are working on the game, but we would imagine that, with all those Flash character models just lying around on a computer, his original work is in here somewhere.

So how does a series of wacky, cheaply-animated vignettes translate to the DS? A minigame collection with vague training elements, of course! If we hadn't told you that the change-making game seen here had a license, would you be able to tell it apart from any other training game? The other minigames include slide puzzles, searching for items in a dark room, and a racing minigame in which rubbing the stylus back and forth increases the speed of the car.

The last screenshot redeems the whole thing: it's a lightsaber dueling game with stylus controls, presented in silhouette. That looks pretty awesome! Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

More Phantom Hourglass commercials for Japan, nothing for us

Whether it's shields or mini-sites, we can't seem to stop torturing ourselves with Phantom Hourglass news. We're actually physically pained by the fact that Japan will be receiving the game as early as next week; meanwhile, we're still waiting for a US release date to be announced, wallowing in self-pity with nothing but Destination Software's Chicken Shoot to look forward to. We want to chase chickens into corners, carry them over our heads, or even slash at them with a sword until a flood of poultry pour into our screens to defend their friend -- not shoot at them! We cry fowl at Chicken Shoot!

Nintendo's latest commercial for The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass depicts a young girl finding clues, taking notes, and counting Link's steps to unlock one of the game's many secrets. As you'll see past the post break, no chickens were harmed in the making of the video.

Complete World 1-1 without looking, get on TV

It got one guy on TV, at least, in Japan. Super Mario Bros. has completely become a spectator event, and deservedly so-- check out this guy's virtuoso performance of the first stage (of the Famicom Mini version of Super Mario Bros. played on a DS Lite). Sure, he wanders a bit, but that's only because he's playing it without looking.

We're going to start training to perform this feat ourselves. And then we're going to practice our creepy vacant smile so we'll be ready for our big television debut. Check out the video after the break.

Harvest Moon Crossing

Harvest Moon DS saw its US release over half a year ago, but the colorful farming sim didn't cross the Atlantic until earlier this month. A TV commercial advertising the game has been airing in the UK, and we were surprise to see how similar its presentation is to Nintendo's commercials for Animal Crossing: Wild World in Japan and Europe.

AC:WW was an indisputable success sales-wise in every territory, so we can see why Nintendo would want to mimic its marketing push with Harvest Moon DS. Compare the video clips yourself after the post break to see what we mean.

More English Training helps you order a cheeseburger

The sequel to English Training: Have Fun Improving Your Skills -- also known as Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Eigo Zuke in Japan -- has a new commercial demonstrating its usefulness. The television spot shows a Japanese woman attempting to order lunch at an American fast food restaurant, only to find her effort stymied by the language barrier. The resulting burger is enough to leave everyone's mouths agape.

Set to hit Japanese stores later this week, More English Training is filled to the brim with over 400 "conversation situations" that will help users with everyday tasks like phone calls and customer/clerk dialogue. As the non-game's lighthearted commercial can attest, a little training can go a long way in making sure that your cheeseburger doesn't have any avocado in it.

Lee Na Young debuts Korean commercial for New Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo of Korea has put out a 30-second commercial to accompany its recent release of New Super Mario Bros. The advertisement continues the Korean branch's trend of using a popular face to push their products, enlisting the help of an actress famous for both her TV and film roles.

The commercial is set up much like its Italian and Japanese counterparts, introducing the scene with a shot of an enthusiastic girl playing with a DS Lite in her bedroom. The ad alternates between clips of gameplay and close-ups of Lee's reactions. An extended, minute-long video without the gameplay clips is also available.

DS TV tuner created from 1984 Trans Am

Seriously, I had a friend in high school who drove a '84 Pontiac Trans Am and the dashboard looked just like this...thing. Actually, upon further inspection, I believe that antenna is the exact one and the same, ripped from the dated-beauty of the hood of his 1984 Pontiac Trans Am and affixed, in pure Frankenstein-like fashion, upon this bulky add-on. Considering the allure of simplistic design that the DS, and even more so the Lite, has achieved, this is one eyesore of an adapter. What's even more puzzling is how the adapter was proposed almost a year ago, looking identically the same, yet the color grey.
