
There's a lot more depth to Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer than just traveling through and subsequently dying in its treacherous dungeons. As with its unique monsters, Chunsoft's roguelike offers an interesting variety of companions and side quests to add some spice to your journey.
We've posted a new batch of screenshots of Shiren and his talking weasel, Koppa, chatting it up with the locals and getting all up in everyone's business in our gallery below. Apparently, there's a guy named Butafooter running a bungee jumping business on a bridge. That doesn't sound too safe. Also, what kind of name is Butafooter?! Who would name their kid that?! He must have had a hard life, growing up.

Yeah! This whole bungee jumping stuff, while new in the DS, was something seemingly cut late in the production of the SNES game way back (players of the SNES version might recall a meaningless bridge you have to walk across a few levels after the third town).

When I first managed to clear the "main" part of the game, I wondered if that was all*. Then these further quests start opening up, and not just in a "go to this place and talk to this guy" manner, but rather with kind of cool story elements to them. So I was really motivated to dig into these new quests/dungeons and found the new graphics and soundtrack a nice touch.
Chunsoft has really managed to add story and progression to the underlying roguelike game.
I'm wondering how it will sell in North America and Europe, since I think this DS version has only sold a few hundred thousand in Japan (maybe that's good, I don't know).
I'm also interested in what changes they've made for the English version. Maybe it's naive, but I trust Sega not to screw up the game, based on the recent interviews. I'm guessing they only had to make a few cosmetic changes to some of the graphics for North America -- like the symbol that shows up when you uncurse an item. What do you think Lordgek?
* Note: I also wondered if I should erase the game data because I wanted to watch the "final" credits scene again! ;-)

I'm not saying they wouldn't...but why would they need to take out the cool ghosty that flies up when decursing?
I'm HOPING all they change is the text.
If they do anything to "wussify" the game (persistent character levels, allowing you to bring in equipment in any of the original big three bonus dungeons, etc.), I will cry.

Isn't the ghost when an item is cursed. But reading a scroll to de-curse an item shows a pentagram under Shiren's feet, doesn't it?!
Also, I'm wondering if they'll change the symbol on the hilt of the manjikabura sword, since it might be misconstrued.
