A gamer's romance

Many serious gamers face a dilemma; finish that last level, or spend time with their significant other. Tipster, Vincent writes: "My brother was passing up the opportunity to cuddle with his wife in favor of Final Fantasy IV Advance on my other brother's DS."

Does passing up on the female species in favor of a game make you irrational, a true gamer, or just plain human (at least as a male species)? I know my wife has heard similar excuses while playing my DS in the past.

Top Spin 2 for DS delayed

After announcing finiancial losses in a company press statment, Take-Two Interactive said they will be delaying Top Spin 2 for the Nintendo DS. Originally scheduled for a January release just in time for the Aussie Open, the publisher has pushed the game back until the second quarter of 2006.

A loss for dual screen tennis fans everywhere. Anyone looking foward to this one?

Nintendo DS and the GBA successor

Nintendo DSNintendo has ushered in the new craze in handheld gaming with the Nintendo DS. Great games, solid battery life, and lots of third-party support. As the Gameboy Advance is nearing what seems to be the end of its life, it will be interesting to see how a two handheld strategy might work for Nintendo.

Though nothing is official, Nintendo has said that the DS is not a Game Boy replacement, rather, it is an expansion of the portable market. A Game Boy successor is expected by many within 1-2 years, and a preview unveiling of the system possibly by year's end.

So what say ye DS Fanboys? How would you like the Nintendo DS to interact, play, or get along with what may or may not be a future Game Boy?

Nintendo cements Amazon's record Xmas

Amazon MapGone are the days when "Amazon" referred to a lush South American stretch of land, brimming with exotic animals, untouched rivers and impenetrable jungles. No, that Amazon has long since been uprooted, trampled and burnt to the ground to make way for computer servers to power the modern and decidedly more well-stocked Amazon. That's progress for you.

Amazon has made quite some progress this year, with their Christmas sales reaching epic proportions. They've reportedly sold more than 108 million items with virtual carts being filled at a rate of 41 orders per second. It was a blue Christmas for them, as the top-selling items in video game hardware were, of course, the Pearl Blue GBA SP and the Electric Blue DS. Oh, and that PSP thingamabob.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO was also kind enough to impart some holiday well-wishing. "We are grateful to our customers for shopping with us this holiday season and we wish everyone a happy new year."
In other words, thanks for giving us your money and we hope you're still alive next year so you can do it again.

Hudson classics coming back

Lode Runner Screenshot
Re-releasing old classics on portable gaming systems? What a novel and hitherto unexplored idea! Those crazy guys at Hudson have plumbed their archives of goodness and yanked out a few classics they thought you might enjoy again and then promptly squeezed them into tiny little GBA carts. You know, those things that go into that bottom slot thingy in your DS.

The "Hudson Best Collection" label will see the release of several great NES games, including Lode Runner, Nuts & Milk, Star Soldier, Adventure Island, Bomberman and, er, Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. Hmm, sounds like that last one should be tossed. Dreadful puns aside, I fondly remember my time with Lode Runner. I loved that game - the tension, the satisfaction of stealing a pile of gold and the realization that....you just dug yourself into a freakin' hole. Again! Man, I hated that game.

DS Fanboy - What does it all mean?

nintendo dsDS Fanboy is the fan site for the best portable in existence, the Nintendo DS. It had arguably the best games of any system in 2005, and it plays the always popular GBA carts. Our site is an extension of our parent and multi-platform gaming site, Joystiq.

We mix critique, news, articles, hacks, fan paraphernalia, and commentary on the dual screen handheld with a little added subjectivity.

Touching. It's what we do. Welcome.

New uses for that GBA slot

Nintendo DS Rumble PakApart from allowing us to replay our favorite GBA games, like Astro Boy: Omega Factor, that slot at the bottom of the DS has opened the door to many interesting possibilities. One such possibility is that of vibration, most recently seen in Metroid Prime Pinball's Rumble Pak. It slots right into the GBA slot and, depending on what's happening in the game, will provide some semblance of force feedback to your sweaty hands. But why stop there?

This is the question posed by one Brian Langlois, who suggests some creative alternative uses for the GBA slot on the DS. An Eyetoy-like device, a gyroscopic motion-sensing cart and a teeny tiny hard drive are just some of the options he discusses in his article at NintendoDS Advanced. It's well worth a read, though be warned that it makes gratuitous use of the word "pak". I've always hated that word, for some reason.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time Interview

Mario & Luigi: Partners in TimeHaving just been released on the DS, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is looking to be an exceptionally enjoyable follow-up to the GBA's Superstar Saga. Apart from the great union between platforming and RPG elements, a common thread of quality between the two games has been the witty and self-referential writing. MTV (yes, that MTV) has posted up a rather interesting article and interview with the script writer for both titles, Nate Bihldorff. It details some of his influences, inspirations, his love for writing dialogue for villains and some truly amusing moments from the games.

Several hours into the game, a character implores Mario to save Princess Peach. "You will save her, won't you?" he says. "I assure you she is not in another castle."

Now that's funny.
