Square Enix spent the morning revealing its lineup of "fresh new faces and timeless classics" that the company plans to exhibit this week at E3, attaching US release dates to its upcoming titles:
We're jumping on our beds with glee over the fact that we'll be receiving
Front Mission so early after the localization was announced, but several disappointing details failed to escape our attention --
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: The Sealed Grimoire,
It's a Wonderful World,
FFIV DS, and
Dragon Quest IX's absence; and
Ring of Fates' distant date. The multiplayer ARPG and its
DS Lite bundle are scheduled to hit Japan this August 23rd.

If you've been dying to know when
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings would be soaring onto your DS, then take heart: we at least have a release
window now. The game is scheduled to make its way to North American gamers this winter. Considering it was just released in Japan, the wait isn't terribly long. Plenty of time to run through
Final Fantasy XII again, if you're so inclined! It's been a much longer wait for
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, which is also slated for later this year, though the game was released last December in Japan. Square Enix wants
all our money this holiday season, and with games like these, they just might get it.

Attendees at the Square Enix party 2007 will be able to pick up a ton of fantastic gear, including the pictured clock. The 'Ivalice Alliance' inscription is taken from the Final Fantasy universe. Other things up for grabs include
Final Fantasy XI treasure coins,
Dragon Quest pin badges, coaster sets and manga. The party takes place this weekend in Chiba, Japan.
All this swag doesn't come for nothing -- you're expected to earn your game memorablia. The requirements aren't too onerous though; most of them involve collecting stamps from the various game stands present at the party.
You could just wait for this stuff to find its way onto your online auction site of choice in the not-too-distant future.

We doubt that's going to be the real title, but we never could avoid sequel humor. Apparently, director Motomu Toriyama enjoyed making
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings so much that he'd like to develop a sequel.
This is by no means a
confirmation or an
announcement or any of the other things it'll be labeled on message boards. It's just a casual statement. But a
Revenant Wings sequel seems likely, since the sales have been
pretty good, and, most importantly, we're talking about
Square Enix, who has kind of a
thing for sequels.

As you may have heard, there's some serious
Pokémon action this week, and the sheer magnitude of that spotlight has somewhat dwarfed everything else -- but fear not, there are other games for those who aren't Poké-fans. Note that we're not promising they're good ... we're just saying that they are, in fact, games. We're curious how
SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters turns out, definitely, since we've heard
mixed reports.
- Classic Action: Devilish
- Pokemon Diamond
- Pokemon Pearl
- SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS
Check after the jump to see what's out this week in the rest of the world. Japanese-speaking importers, take note: there is some
serious hotness releasing in Japan this week, along with 367
other games.

Have we not shown enough enthusiasm for
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings? Does Square Enix think that we're not writhing with anticipation over this game? We thought it was pretty clear that we'll be there on day one with our faces pressed to the door, but apparently someone thinks that we still need to be lured in with a bevy of gorgeous videos. Maybe we should play hard to get more often.
Jeux France has the latest embedded on their site, as well as some new screens. Go check it out, because every day is a good day for a little
Final Fantasy.

Jeux France is reporting a juicy rumor about espers in
FFXII: Revenant Wings. Not only is Shiva rumored to be included, but the super hot (cold?) ice goddess is bringing along a few members of her family. Apparently, there will be others, like a male version (Shiva's husband), and a young female child Shiva. We're not sure what role these might play, but it definitely makes for an interesting rumor. Jeux France expects confirmation (or negation) soon.
If this is true, we just hope that Little Shiva finds a few more scraps of clothing, or it may change the game just a little, and we'll be facing another one of
these situations.

Looks like someone decided that they needed to move a few more DS Lites in Japan, since sales have been flagging. The poor handheld has really struggled to gain a foothold.
Sigh. Maybe this spankin' new limited edition DS Lite will do the trick. We do hear that this
Final Fantasy series is a little on the popular side.
Seriously, this new
FFXII: Revenant Wings DS Lite (aka the Sky Pirates edition) is pretty slick, though a little understated, as you can see after the jump. Who wants to start betting on whether or not this will beat those
crazy early sales for
Final Fantasy III?

While we've seen some
gameplay screens before from
FFXII: Revenant Wings, some of these are at least bigger, if not better. High quality shots seem to be hard to come by, but Japanese print magazines have been the biggest resource thus far on this game. Once you accept a little graininess, however, these look pretty great. Check 'em out after the jump!

German site GameFront has apparently been pillaging all the
Revenant Wings images they could get their hands on, for they've collected a veritable trove of shots, from gameplay screens to mind-blowing concept art. We've hidden a few behind the jump, but definitely check out the source, too -- there's so many images, it'll bring a tear to your eye.

And with the screens come the new details. We've already heard that the battle system for
FFXII: Revenant Wings will be a simplified version of that in
FFXII proper, with specialized stylus functionality -- now we see it in (still) action. Now we also know there is no battle screen -- all fights take place in real time, and the player uses the stylus to position characters for battle. Sounds like a lot for the DS to handle, and we can't wait to see it in action.
Check out a few more shots from Vaan and Penelo's upcoming adventure after the jump.

Just in time for the US release of Final Fantasy XII, updates for the spin-off have surfaced. Co-producer Eisuke Yokoyama and scenario writer/director Motomu Toriyama talked a bit with Dengeki DS Style magazine about the battle system, characters, summons and the world of Ivalice. Here are a few snippets from the IGN article:
- Asked if the game would use FFXII's ADB system, Yokoyama said that the battle system is mostly new. However, in order to keep FFXII players from getting confused, there will be a number of shared elements. The Gambit system will be a part of this title, although it will be simplified in order to accommodate beginner players. Also, the battle system will be fully playable with the stylus.
- Dengeki asked a question about the number of party members capable of joining your group. To this, Yokoyama responded that Fran and Balthier will definitely join in as party members (they were shown in the Tokyo Game Show trailer, after all). Due to the new game systems, Yokoyama expects there to be more party members than in FFXII.
- Summon beasts will apparently play a big role in the game. Toriyama expects Revenant Wings to have the most summon beasts of any Final Fantasy game ever. The summon beasts will be the key to battles, said Toriyama, and their use will be different from that of previous titles.
As more and more details appear, the eager question of Wi-Fi support sticks in our mind. There hasn't been any word involving Wi-Fi and Revenant Wings but we hope to hear some in the future. With the game taking advantage of every other aspect the Nintendo DS has to offer it would be a shame to see a key element get left out in the cold.
