DS Opera browser in action

In this wonderfully Japanese video of the DS Opera browser in action, you can see how smooth the zoom feature will work with the stylus and touchscreen, as well as inputting data into fields to search via Google. Looks great and we can't wait to give it a whirl!

DS browser lacks some essentials [Update]

In our continuing coverage of the Opera DS browser, the latest bit of information from IGN states that the browser will not support Flash, nor will it support .pdf files, video, or sound. Also, the browser will not allow for the saving of images. All of this is taken from the Nintendo DS browser page.

Previously-stated nifty aspects of the browser, such as full stylus control, still remain intact, but the lack of support for videos and sound is a painful blow to the appeal of the add-on. Will this neglect in features affect your purchasing decision?

[Update: Fixed some of the wording in regards to saved images. Thanks for the correction Probot!]

Another DS Opera browser preview

After his graduation from the Academy of One-upmanship, .ed began to look all over the web for an opportunity to utilize his new degree in the field. It wasn't very long until he came across the first DS Opera Hands On review. With the stage properly set, and the stars aligned accordingly, .ed went ahead and attempted to one-up Jon.

Containing a massive collection of pictures, as well as in-depth look at everything the browser offers, from clicking links to fonts, .ed's in-depth look at the browser on the DS has given us a very good scoop on what to expect from the final product. Money well spent on that degree there...

Opera browser review

Opera fanatic Jon recently got his hands on a prototype build of the Opera browser for the DS, scheduled for release in Japan on July 24th for around 33$ U.S. dollars.

Jon seems quite impressed with the early build. One can use "dual screen" mode, where the page simply occupies both screens at once; also available is a "zoom" mode, where the top screen shows a downsized overview of the entire page, and the stylus can be used to drag around a box to view things in actual size. He praises the intuitive interface, high compatibility, and sleek design. Here's hoping this thing can get here fast.

[Thanks Mike!]

View Opera Browser box art through a web browser

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20060622/opera.htmThese web browser things are fantastic innovations. We fully understand why Nintendo would want to have one on their DS. They no doubt envisioned situations such as these, where you could use the newfangled technology to actually look at images online, images depicting anything from adorable kittens to Japanese box art. The guys at Game Watch were quick to take advantage and have "uploaded" the two versions (one for each DS model) of the Opera Browser packaging. We know. Being at the helm of cutting-edge technology can be quite frightening.

Larger images "after the break". Whatever that means.

Opera announces browser release date for Japan

Releasing to the Japanese gaming public on July 24th, the Opera web browser for the DS will initially only be sold online for 3,800 Yen (around $33 US) and come standard with a memory expansion pack. Nothing has been said as to release date for US launch of the browser, but we assume we'll be hearing more once July 24th hits and Japanese impressions are measured.

DS browser screenshots

Some shots for the anticipated Opera browser that is slated to hit a DS near you soon have hit the net, and although there are only 3 of them, we likes what we sees. It appears the browser will be utilized to its maximum potential through the touch screen for both inputting text and zooming in on pages, which is not new news, but seeing it in the flesh makes it a much more appealing prospect. Personally, I'm a Firefox user, but I can see myself giving this a go.

What say you fine readers?

DS Lite: Japanese news video

Footage from a Japanese TV news program detailing the DS Lite and its forthcoming web browser and TV tuner add-ons is now available online for your  deeply personal watching pleasure. The clip contains plenty of DS Lite action shots, a brief demonstration of the Opera browser and above all, an unmatched level of politeness.

More DS browser details

Infendo has some of the specifics regarding the recently announced Opera web browser for the DS. First of all, it will not support Java applets, Flash or PDF files, a bit of a bummer if you were particularly keen on watching animations or reading laborious technical documents on your DS.

The pint-sized version of Opera will allow for two browsing modes, namely "fit to width" and "DS mode", a zoom function and bookmarking (don't count on RSS support). It'll also be able to recognize your handwriting, allowing you to transform written URLs into text and forego the kind of slow and clunky on-screen keyboard you may find on other portable systems. A final note points out that the browser will be fully compatible with both variants of the DS.

The Opera DS browser has its Japanese debut sometime in June, with a US appearance sure to follow shortly.

DS Web Browser, TV tuner revealed

Well, Nintendo's big DS press conference in Japan has come and gone, with the fallout raining down upon us like a torrent of delicious, bite-sized candy. Though the main purpose of the conference was to parade the extraordinarily beautiful DS Lite about, Nintendo also took the opportunity to unveil some exciting new add-ons.

As many of our readers correctly predicted, the melancholy and overly dramatic Internet browser, Opera, is indeed being released for the DS! Launching in June for approximately $30, the Opera browser is a fully featured, non-firmware web browser adapted to display pages on both screens and allow for stylus-based input. Yay!

Nintendo also revealed a TV tuner add-on that simply plugs into the DS card slot and beams television programming straight to your portable. Though the chances of this little device making it to the West are slightly slimmer than the web browser, don't count it out just yet.

Other points of note regarding the conference:
  • The New Super Mario Bros. game will be released in Japan this May.
  • Tetris DS will sell at a budget price.
  • Calligraphy Training is coming to the DS, doing for the hand what Brain Training did for the mind.
  • New footage of Xenosaga Episode 1-2 and Children of Mana was shown.
  • Super Robot Wars, Dynasty Warriors and Winning Eleven 9, oh my! The last two will be using the Wi-Fi connection.
Well, I guess we'd better get working on a DS-optimized version of DS Fanboy.
