For what it's worth, apparently the Japanese DS Demo Kiosks do not work with non Japanese DS systems. Brandon Piltcher writes: "I took my American DS to the booth, and it gave me the option to download Mario Kart demo and a Dragon Quest demo. I had a good connection, but when I went to download, the connection dropped out... After a few times, I got help and according to the store employee, [kiosks] wont work with non Japanese DS systems."
Regional coding is pretty standard with electronics, but could a truly international DS have a place? Bummer if you're going to Japan with an American DS, but hey, you're still in Japan.
[Thanks, Brandon]

My guess is that they did this because they are evil.
I guess they found out about the tools that allowed us to play demos from a RALINK card :D
It sucks that they are trying to protect them, some of those demos would have been awesome to try-before-you-buy.
Personally, I tried (Via WMB) Trauma Center and Meteos, and I was delighted. The opposite goes to polarium.
Since we can't rent games on a local gamestore, getting a (free) demo is the closest we are, and yet, they refuse us to have it. :(

Might be due to wi-fi channels, I don't know much about them but countries are forced to use certain channels, and you probably weren't on the right one. I had problems with Mario 64 DS with a european and american DS, it eventually worked but only after a lot of retries

This is really weird... This makes me wonder if some of the problems people are having with Nintendo Wi-Fi are connected to their having a Japanese system and it not communicating properly with the router due to differences...

I hope I luck out, I'm there every summer and I just got an American DS! Hmm.
In other news, Dragon Quest on the DS? I had no idea - what a happy day.

Espen is definitely up to something. I never thought of that myself.
WMB does allow using different channels, so booyah Nintendo! :D
I dont know, but I think American and Japanese DSs do have different channels.

My Japanese system works fine with wifi in the US, I doubt that's the problem.

I wondered why I hadn't seen a new wifi demo since pokemon torouze. I bought trauma center because I spent hours with the demo.

Japanese shopkeepers will probably say that non-Japanese products are incompatible nine times out of ten. I've been told that my iBook, which I bought in the UK, might not work in Japan. They're identical machines around the world except for the keyboard! But when I took it in to get looked at the service and repair guys exhanged nervous glances.

Every shop in Japan will go out of their way to convince you that the products are incompatible. When I bought my iMac I had to practically throw a tantrum on the floor before the assistant would allow me to buy it, then when I returned to get a TV capture box they repeatedly insisted it would not work with my iMac. When I bought my DS and PSPs the store insisted they would not work outside of Japan repeatedly ignoring my protests that I live in Japan. As a foreigner any issues you may have with electronic equipment are instantly put down to your magical gaijin rays.
Oh yes, it also happened when I tried to buy the latest release of OSX, the assistant insisted on trying to find me an English version even though the only difference is the box packaging and inserts.

I had the exact same problem when I bout my DS. It took about half an hour longer than it should have to buy it. And like they really care if I'll be able to use it outside of Japan anyways.
Wait...it will work right?
