For those who still don't have broadband access, there is a hack allowing DS gamers to access Nintendo's wi-fi network via a dial-up connection. From the tutorial: "This tutorial is to help you get connected to Nintendo Wifi with a dial-up connection. Even though lots of people think that wifi with dial-up would lag and cause the people with high speed internet to go slow, but that is not true. At normal dial-up speed (56kb) it will go just about as fast as high speed internet; the only thing that will happen if you have a really slow dial-up connection or if you're downloading on the internet at the same time you will just see the other characters of the other people you are connected to go slow ot bounce and the other people will just see your character go slow or bounce on their screen."[via Digg]

I was racing in MKDS once against someone who was clearly on dialup and it was PAINFUL. I'm sorry, dialup can't handle the simultaneous upload/download rates required for it. It hurts the gameplay for everyone else. I don't even wanna know how bad ACWW would be playing with someone on dialup.

Also, we'll show you how to run F.E.A.R on your TRS-80.
I know there are still some people without high-speed internet. But, the majority have it, so, please, don't use dial-up to connect to my MKDS game. It sucks. Nintendo should check for minimum UL/DL rates and that would take care of the problem.

I only have one-way cable, which uses cable to download but dial-up to upload, and I do lag on MKDS. By that I mean I see people bouncing around everywhere, and I have to lag shoot (aim just a bit ahead) to hit someone with a shell, etc. It's no big deal for me, but it gets even worse when other people in my house are online. I can't do anything about it, though, until my ISP upgrades me to two-way cable, if ever.

Oh ye of little faith. Playing games online via dialup is an ancient tradition, still practiced by those in the deep rural areas who piss their pants when greeted with satellite broad-band prices!
I've played most FPS games online via dialup, and I still play WoW via dialup. I have a hard time imagining the DS games would be much more lagier, and at times my ping is better than my boyfriend who's on cable.

No. No. No.
Seriously, coming from a former dial-up user, I have to ask, "Why?" I mean, yea, EVERYONE should be able to play, but how far away from a McDonalds do you live? Dial-up should be banned across the world... it is that bad...

I'm on dial-up and I've been playing MKDS since it came out (You might recognize my "I heart 56k" icon). By my estimates, MKDS probably takes about 3KB/s; I regularly transfer at 5KB/s, this is well within 56k tolerances. I can attest to you that 80% of the time, there is no noticable lag.
When I do lag, the game remains entirely playable; with no drop in frame rate and only the opponent's karts are "stuttering". Barring weapons, the laggy race is entirely the same.
Furthermore, the vast majority of weapons are lag-agnostic. Red shells, blue shells, bombs, bullet bills, and bananas. When green shells come into play, I have to compensate for lag, but it seems to come rather easily. Yes, I realize my opponents have to take such measures against me, too, but they get the same lag-agnostic weapons that I do; and they probably know when I'm lagging anyway, so they should be using lag-compensated aiming against me. Its only one weapon, anyway.
Using 56k doesn't make my game any less pleasurable, it doesn't make your game any less pleasurable, and it certainly doesn't give me an advantage. So who would you rather race?
I swear, bigotry against 56k gets worse and worse every year...

yes my house is too far out in the country and even though i live only 8 minutes from the nearest town they still wont run a cable to my house and i live in one of those decent sized country neighborhood where all of the houses are new. comcast wont run a cable, verizon wont run a cable and the satellite internet charge would require me 2 kill a hobo every month 4 his arm and leg. and our town McDonald's doesnt have nintendo wifi, too rural i guess. i dont have any other option at my house so dial-up it is. but i dont game on it neway so dont fret.
and then when i came to college winter after break, i was upset to find out that the required campus network security wouldnt let me connect use wireless router so im S.O.L. again. so maybe this is finally the key to me finally getting my MKDS skills online (on weekends anyway). cause there is no competition around here. i absolutely destroy everyone i play. IM FINALLY READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD!!!!! MUAAAAHHHHH HHHAAAAHHHHHAAAAA!!!!!! *cough* *cough* MUAAAAAHHHHH HHHAAAAHHHHHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

you may not even see the lag but other players will, even if you can download at 5kb you can only upload at just over 1kb and since you are uploading a lot more compared to a normal online game other people will see you bouncing all over the place since you carn't send them information fast enough.

DUBA WAT DO U MEAN HOW IS IT GOING TO GO FROM JAPAN TO THE US!????????? FIBER OPTIC CaBLES! there not actually going to establish a wireless link, h/o wile i smack u!/rant
Ne way i think bandwith wont be much of a problem. they say 1'000 max. Now think aboiut this, maybe estimate that 5 peeople conect to there servers from each hotspot. Thats a simple request with a lil info and SAying PAIR ME. Then they simply establish a dc between all the playters or those triding. Thats not allot of bandwith. And as storage space, were talking downloadable games or upgrades. Thats like 100 gigs at a time, which is definetely less than the HD sapce the machines running the hotspots will have.

Okay
If they're going to make it available through dialup, they should also release a windows 98 driver for the dongle.
