Brain Age site launches

The website for Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! has launched, and in following with Nintendo's goals for the game, features a lot of different types of people, young and old, having at it with DS in hand and commenting on their own performance. The website also showcases a comprehensive how-to on playing the game, taking the viewer through the motions and undoubtedly causing their mouth to salivate with the wish to taste the succulent delicacies the game will soon have to offer. Do yourself a favor and go check the site out to tide you over these next few days until you can get your hands on your own copy (unless you were one of the lucky in attendance at GDC).

Is anyone else confused by the idea of extreme anticipation for this game? I mean, sure, it sounds kinda fun, I could enjoy it, but I don't expect it to be a great gaming experience. I can certainly understand why the Japanese like it, the way they treat highschool entrance exams, but they're all nucking futs. (And I mean that in the nicest way.)

Anyone that's really frothing at the mouth for this wanna step up and explain why? I'm really curious.

I guess we'll only know once we get to try it out.

However, the Japanese version does have features unique to them only. IE, the Japanese like to make sure they know their Kanji (Chinese characters).

I live in Japan and I didn't hesitate to buy this game for my DS lite: it's really fun ! Yes, the Kanji exercices are really difficult for me (impossible) but the mathematics and memory "games" are great: it's like a pinball: a simple game and you want to do the best score every day.

You have to try it to realise what the attraction is.

I'm sure many readers have tried reading those books and articles which claim to help you develop your memory, etc. but they're always so dry, and expect you to follow a set path through to the end of the book. I always find myself losing interest, or just not being able to get the theories to work.

Brain Age adds a dynamic element to the whole thing, and has enough variety and humour, plus the goals and methods are set by your own personal progress. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that the handwriting games can be very frustrating (especially the word list) until you get used to the way it expects you to draw your characters.

I would say that I definitely feel a bit sharper, memory-wise, after a few weeks of playing it, and the nice thing is that it is teaching you many of the fundamentals that you learnt when you were a schoolchild, but have since forgotten, even though they're still valid.

You also get to enhance your pattern recognition skills, which is something that is always useful, but never gets used enough in concentrated bursts. I.e. whenever this skill is needed, it's a one-off situation, and while it might take a while to sort it out, you've more than likely solved the problem through brute force rather than logic.

When the Euro version is released I will actually be buying it and a DS-lite for lending to friends, as well getting my own copy.

Oh, and it has probably one of the best implementations of Sudoku I've seen so far, and actually makes it realistic to play it quickly, without all the tedious scribbling and rubbing out (you still have to do that, but as it's digital, it's a lot more convenient).

The touch-screen really shows its worth with this game.
