Carmack: Nintendo isn't really our thing

If you don't know the name John Carmack, then it's likely you aren't one who's ever traversed the hellish landscape of both Mars and, well...Hell. You've never taken a chainsaw to an Imp's face and you've likely never obliterated a Cyberdemon with a Big F**king Gun. Well, John Carmack, who is the id Software co-owner/technical director and helped bring all these wonderful scenarios to PC gamers the world over, recently spoke at Quakecon, commenting on both Nintendo platforms.

In regards to the DS, John stated that he could possibly see the company bringing its cell phone games to the handheld, but didn't really express much interest to do so, which goes against earlier reports. Stating that even if this were to happen, which he obviously could care less if it does by the sound of things, Carmack stated that the games would be instead published through another third-party rather than Nintendo directly. Eh, who needs him, anyway?

1. Well, I cannot say I'll miss much, 'his'(iD software) games are basically sequels and sequels one after another without any real change in their formula besides the graphical aspect, and no wonder he isn't really excited or interested in DS since it won't enable him to work on his polygon-fest.

2. Well, I love FPSs, but I don't like the subgenre of "monster-killing" FPSs. I prefer ones in which people are the targets rather than creatures from hell.

3. His games aren't really Nintendo's thing, either. Nintendo is about innovation and fun for all ages, not ultra-realism and cookie-cutter FPS'es.

4. Nintendo will become his "thing" when this near-sighted, apathetic and overrated fool sees the Wii blow up like the DS and the third party's are raking it in without having to drop millions.

5. Gotta agree with inlogic here... While the first Doom games were landmark achievements in gaming, Doom 3 failed to excite me - the graphics were about the only thing which improved.

We waited a decade (or so) for eye candy. Yay.

It's fair enough that Carmack/id and Nintendo don't go well together... One is all about high performance eye candy, while the other has always been about innovative and fun gameplay.

6. It's okay not to want to develop for a particular console, guys. Settle down. It doesn't mean LOL ID SOFTWARE DOESN'T LIKE COOL GAMES. It just means that they don't care about consoles at all.

With the exception of Doom RPG, id has always been a PC-only developer. Sure, they may have hired out ports to other systems, but it doesn't mean they cared about those systems at all.

7. Well it's not like he has done anything new in the last few years, so who cares about his old and stupid games...

8. Heh, I've never seen so much bitterness against Carmack because Carmack has had TERRIBLE experiences with Nintendo in the past. From the original Wolf3D, up to Quake 64, he's had nothing but trouble when dealing with them.

id have always been about great engines, and good games. Doom3 and Q4 were incredible looking, average FPSes. (Not that average is bad) and Quake3 is STILL used 7 years as the premiere deathmatch game in many pro-gaming tourneys.

9. Never playd any of his games (or very many other PC games for that matter), so I don't know.

BTW, it's "could NOT care less". If he "could care less" that means that he does care, and that it is possible for him to not care as much as he does.

10. Hmm, Quake3 was ok, but a bit dull (UT is still far far better), Quake4 looked nice, but was a poor, rigid, unimaginative game. Doom3 looked very nice, but was a very very poor game.

The DS and the Wii have the greatest potential of all the non-PC systems to support FPS games, so it's strange (incredible) that ID aren't interested...

However, you can guarantee other developers will be falling over themselves, so who cares!

11. id games has been lacking since the good old days of Quake II so I won't say I will miss his products! Quake IV was mild at best and while the graphics were enjoyable the gameplay wasn't.

12. Anyone happy about Carmack not working with Nintendo is seriously delusional. He's one of the prime moves in the technology of games, and pioneered ideas which at the time was thought to be pure fancy. I would love to see what he and Id could do if they really focused on a console system, and the DS in particular, but Carmack has always loved the limitless promise of a PC. If anything, we should be looking for ways to attract him to the DS, not push him away.
