The DS Lite's speakers are certainly nothing to be ashamed of. They deliver fairly crisp sound (Elite Beat Agents is a wonderful example) at a decent volume. Still, is this enough in public places? Or are you simply too embarrassed for some games' vibrational happiness to be transmitted to the people around you?Certainly, headphones can offer a more immersive experience in a game. However, the inconvenience of having to carry around an extra device may outweigh the benefits for some. Do you use headphones, and if you do, are they a quality set? How often do you use them? Let's hear it, people.
And if a tree falls in the woods, it totally makes a sound. That question is ridiculous.

I use my iPod headphones (the new kind) almost whenever I play my DS. The DS's sound doesn't require the most expensive, noise cancelling teh uber headphones so they work great.
They are also portable, fit in my case, and are white like the DS so I can match!

I play mostly with the sound turned down. I probably have games in my DS Library I wouldn't even recognize the opening theme music from if I heard it.

I use the headphones that came with my sansa 250r. They work fine and I use them a lot since I play my ds in bed a lot and dont want to wake the girlfriend. Oh and the sansa is much better than my old Ipod for anyone that cares. Two words EXPANDABLE MEMORY!

I use Sony MDR-EX51LP for all my portable audio sources. Not too expensive, 39.99 retail. I commute on Mass Transit, so if I want to hear my DS, headphones are a must. I find it quite annoying to listen to the electronics of others, so I don't subject them to the noises from mine. I must admit two things though: First, I agree that the DS does not need expensive headphones. Second, although the MDR-EX51LP's are 39.99, they are I have had better headphones, that were much more expensive.

Generally, I play with the volume around halfway, unless my fiancee is sleeping or I'm in public. I use a $20 set of Sony headphones that have great bass and the behind-the-neck brace. From Target.

I'm using Creative's EP-360 earphones and gotta say that they in-earphones really save your ears. Wouldn't switch back to normal headphones/earphones anymore.

I almost always play with the sound off for 2 reasons.
1) Lots of time the music in games is kind of annoying, and I'd rather have either other music or silence playing.
2) The volume control on the DS Lite is so sensitive, and nearly impossible to get to a quiet but audible level.

I'm usually using my seinheizer mx500 earphones with my ds because I'm either in the metro or in a quiet study environment when I do play. Recently though they broke down and I'm now using these intec retractable ones. I must say the seinheizer ones gave great quality but i just love the retractableness of the inetc ones i bought.

I use my Ipod headpones with my ds. Most of the time I just wrap the earphones around the ds when it's in my pocket. I found that the ds speakers are great for most games but for Elite Beat Agents and Ouden, as well as in the car earphones are a must. Also when I'm playing in bed before I go to sleep my wife insists that I use earphones. So for me, I use earphones most of the time.

Acoustic energy yes, but the existence of sound is in your head. No head, no sound.
I use Sony MDR XD100, mostly to help block out traffic noise, and to keep my ears warm! Lately I've been playing on my GBA SP muted. I can't be bothered with the adapter. That was such a dumb idea.

I use headphones often. I've got a big honking pair of over-the-ear 'phones that I pull out just to scare people.

I prefer not to use earphones at all, but when my roommate is studying, or I'm in a public place where I don't want to disturb anybody, earphones become useful. Otherwise, I like the sound coming out of the DS Lite's speakers.

Although they have their caveats when being used for iPods and other portable music players (mostly due to the cord connector and "behind the neck" style), I am a huge fan of using the Sony Sony-MDR-EX71SL Fontopia Headphones with portable gaming consoles. If you use the shorter cord setting, the length (for me, at least) is perfect for gaming without an excess amount of cord dangling in your lap.
Also, they look great and the sound quality is incredible for the price - easily under 30 bucks from many popular online retailers.

I use the ultimate ears super-fi 3 in-ear headphones, great sound quality and some noise reduction (passive, based on the in-ear seal...).

I'd love to say I still use my electroplankton limited edition headphones (came with japanese version of the game) but they stopped working...

I've found that the electroplankton headphones are actually pretty low quality. Try using it to listen to music on your mp3 or cd player, and you'll find that it drops a lot of the lower frequencies altogether.
