Bomberman Land Story screens explode into our eyeballs

It's been too long since we were able to put our goggles on and prepare for a full facial assault from new screens for Bomberman Land Story. Because, that's what we're getting right now, as we all get to check out some new shots depicting the title screen, world navigation (we assume) and a few menu screens.

Also, it looks the official site for the game has received an update, complete with loads of new content.

Mario is having a party, and you're all invited (to a website)

The Japanese Mario Party DS site is open, and full of screens, videos and general festiveness. There's some information about the different multiplayer modes of the game, which include Party Modes such as 4-player Battle Royal, 2-on-2 Tag Matches, and duels. All of them are just playing minigames against other people, but it's nice to mix it up however possible.

There are also Minigame Modes, which are different from the Party Modes in some way, and include Free Play, Battle Mode, Score Attack, and more. Extra Modes include Color Territory and Draw and Catch, both of which seem to involve capturing squares on a big board via winning minigames. One thing this website makes clear is that there are a lot of modes. We're happy to see Hudson putting so much effort into keeping this Party fresh.

Dungeon Explorer website ready for exploring

Hudson's Dungeon Explorer: Warrior of the Arts website has been around since late August, but it wasn't until TGS that anyone outside Japan had any reason to care.

The latest updates to the site reveal a "form" system, which gives characters multiple elemental special attacks based on which of eight "schools" you choose to affiliate with. We also get a glance at the status screen, which shows, basically, a ton of upgradeable stats.

It's clear, at least, from the screens that this is going to be much more of a full RPG and less of an action game than the original Dungeon Explorer.

Hudson lighting fuse, kicking Bomberman Land Touch 2 to DS

Hudson announced a sequel to Bomberman Land Touch! along with new Bomberman Land games for the PSP and Wii. Whoa, catch your breath. A Bomberman sequel? We know it seems impossible, but it's true. Hudson finally figured out that they can make money by selling Bomberman games. This time, the publishing will be handled by Hudson's parent company, Konami, rather than Atlus.

The new game features an RPG-style Story Mode, otherwise known as "stuff that gets ignored in favor of regular multiplayer Bomberman," and over 40 new minigames, known as "oh, it has minigames? I didn't notice because I just play Bomberman."

What can't be ignored is the 4-player online Battle Mode, which the first Bomberman Land Touch had as well. It's another opportunity for us to lose over and over again to the Game Night community! Check out the link for the first screens, and blow up the post break for a look at the press release.

TGS07: An evident U.S. release for Dungeon Explorer

Dungeon Explorer was a Gauntlet-esque dungeon-crawling RPG that was released on the Turbografx-16 at launch. It's hardly the biggest franchise in the world, but it's one that Hudson has decided to resurrect for the DS and PSP in two different games.

Siliconera's Spencer Yip noticed that some of the demo stations were running an English version of Dungeon Explorer: Warrior of the Arts, which led him to conclude that the game will be released in the U.S. at some point. Being Turbografx-16 nerds, we welcome any future Dungeon Explorer games-- especially if the villain is still named Natas, and if the ending is as satisfying as the original game's secret ending.

We don't actually expect the new game to fulfill either condition. Modern gaming can be so depressing. Gamespot has character art and even a trailer. The trailer mentions Wi-Fi multiplayer and voice chat. Could that be enough to make a big hit of a dungeon crawler?

Elemental Monster: back to regular screens

We kind of want Hudson to release their card-battling game Elemental Monster in the U.S. We have an occasional interest in card games and an ongoing interest in 2D. And, of course, we want to give Hudson a reason to release big posters of the Designers' Choice artwork made to promote the game. Preferably in blacklight-responsive ink on flocked paper, for maximum rockin'-ness. Are we kidding? You'll never know!

It's a bit of a bummer to go back to looking at the (perfectly fine) in-game artwork after seeing the Frank Frazetta fanart masterclass that was the Designers' Choice, but that doesn't mean there's nothing in the actual game to care about.

It's a trading card game with 6-player local wireless play (though we don't know if each player requires a separate copy of the game) and 2-player online play. Presuming that more than two people buy this, it could be a fantastic online game. Oh, that also presumes that it isn't just an awful game.

More like Elemental Awesome

When we first saw Hudson's Elemental Monster, we praised its in-game 2D art as welcome and nice-looking. We had no idea that there were powerful levels of awesome art yet to come. These illustrations of the game's creatures are just flat-out amazing. We're not fantasy art aficionados by any stretch of the imagination, but we know that looking at something like the White Knight above elicits a genuine "wow" from us.

The Elemental Monster Designer's Choice event seems to involve a collection of new art, along with commentary from the artists. Whatever the reason, we've found six fantastic pieces to gawk at. At this point, who even cares about the actual DS game? Hudson should consider it a success based on the art produced in its name.

Picross not hard enough?

Plain old picross, like sudoku, does a perfectly adequate job of scrambling our otherwise capable brain stuff. We watch with terror as more grid-filling puzzle games come to the DS, and hope nobody holds a gun to our head and tells us to solve one of these things. By the way, if you were planning to do that, don't. It's rude.

Hudson's Illustlogic DS + Colorful Logic adds different colored tiles to the grid. Even if you mark in the correct location, you can still get it wrong because of the color. Trying to placate us with the occasional Bomberman powerup doesn't distract us from the fact that Hudson hates us and wants to give us stress headaches!

DS Daily: Takahashi Meijin's challenge

Do you have what it takes to push a button really quickly a bunch of times? If so, you could be headed to an illustrious career at Hudson and even the chance to star in your own excellent game series. It worked for Takahashi Meijin, who became well-known in Japan for being able to push a button 16 times in one second.

We'd like you to demonstrate your prowess the same way he did: by splitting a watermelon testing yourself with a Shooting Watch. Download the DS homebrew program, or try the PC version, and let us know how you stack up! No cheating with Hello Kitty toothbrushes. We won't say how we did, because we're, uh, too busy to try it. Yes, very busy.

Not for carpal tunnel sufferers: Shooting Watch DS

Who knew that a simple concept like the Shooting Watch, a controller that measures how many times you can tap a button in 10 seconds, would go on to sell over a million units? This year marks the 20th anniversary of the yellow device's debut, and to celebrate, the Hudson Caravan has been touring Japan, selling limited edition merchandise and hosting button-tapping contests. Takahashi Meijin's 16 presses per second set the pace.

Hudson manufactured a commemorative batch of 10,000 Shooting Watch systems earlier this year, but they were all sold almost immediately. Upset that he wasn't able to grab one, homebrew developer Retrohead created his own Shooting Watch game for the DS. Just like the real thing, it counts the number of times you can push the A button in ten seconds. If you're fast enough, the on-screen watermelon will explode!

Shooting Watch DS has four other diversions -- clock, stop watch, three slots, and four slots -- all of which are significantly less fun than the titular mode. Keep your thumb rigid and tap past the post break for screenshots of the homebrew game. We've also embedded a video of Takahashi Meijin using his button-pressing skills to blow up watermelons!

Peep these Bomberman Story screens

QJ has the skinny on fresh screens for the upcoming Bomberman Story DS. And, from the looks of these screens, the game is going to be a treat for those looking for a bit of a mixed bag; new gameplay elements that look to have some RPG influences, as well as the old grid-style play. Considering this is the first we've heard of the game, color us excited.

If you're looking for more info on the game, try the Japanese website here and Wikipedia's page for the game here.

DS Lite invades your breakfast

The fine folks at Hudson, who have a wonderful sense of humor, sent the box of cereal you see on your right to the crew at GameSetWatch. Meant as a spoof on their latest title for the DS Honeycomb Beat (check out the Metareview over here), the cereal within is actually Honey-Comb from Post, so it's totally edible and kind of a nice gesture, if we may say so.

As you can see in the box to the right, it features a DS Lite, along with a couple of choice slogans, including "fortified with 200 puzzles" and "Excellent source of Brain Teasing (1 player per serving)." Also of note, are the "Gameplay Facts" on the side of the box, which you all know is the usual place nutrition facts are listed. How do they know it isn't chock full of poison (rather than delicious cereal), though?

Their dachshund Rollo taste-tested it for them!

Wi-Fi Table Games: like Clubhouse Games but smaller and more competitive

A new Game Night contender is on the way to Japan. Hudson released some screenshots of Selected Wi-Fi Table Games, a collection of six classic games in the vein of Clubhouse Games. And by "in the vein of Clubhouse Games" we mean "pretty much the same as Clubhouse Games." The major difference seems to be nationwide ranking, which is admittedly pretty cool.

The included games are Go, Renju, Reversi, Hanafuda, Mah-jongg, and something called Oodomi that uses Western playing cards. The bottom screen shows the game board or table, while the top screen displays character avatars and score information. At the risk of editorializing too much, the online competition had better be mind-blowing to make up for the severe lack of selection.

Subtle limited-edition DS Lite from Hudson

Hudson's Momotaro Dentetsu series of video board games (think Mario Party) has always been popular in Japan. It's so popular, in fact, that it justifies limited-edition hardware. That's a little unsettling, to us. It's hugely popular, but has never been released outside of Japan. Of course, Japan needs limited-edition DS Lites-- and all DS Lites, more than we do. Maybe this will add to the total supply.

This DS Lite comes packaged with Momotaro Dentetsu DS Tokyo & Japan, and features very small character portraits and the series title on the top of the system. It's a very restrained approach to the special edition system, which contrasts to the recent BeDazzling approach. Check after the break for a closeup of the system!

Elemental Monster: new card battler from Hudson

Card-battling games seem like a natural for the DS-- the second screen is especially well-suited for managing cards while the game is in play. But we haven't gotten that many card games-- in fact, SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS is the only one we can think of, and that one's not even out yet.

Hudson's Elemental Monster is a turn-based card-battling game that uses some pretty great 2D sprites. Between battles, the game has an RPG-style story mode, which also uses a lot of hand-drawn 2D. We're actually surprised to see a DS game coming out that has this much non-polygonal art (some backgrounds are 3D, but that's fine!) How about a US release, Hudson?
