Considering that Toys R Us has given
Pokemon fans
free critters in the past, we can't say we're surprised that the store is planning on giving away a free Manaphy to anyone who's willing to tackle the gauntlet of downloading from the store's download station this Saturday. Not only that, but they'll also be offering up DS games at a reduced price, slashing $5 off every title up for grabs in the store.
Anyone planning on downloading Manaphy, or do you already have this one in your cruel collection of kidnapped creatures?
[Thanks, Antwon!]

Banpresto and pretty much every other Japanese toy company knows the importance of releasing a
steady stream of Pokéstuff lest any of us fall out of the series' thrall and
stop buying for a while. To keep us thinking about
Pokémon all day, they've made a duo of new items designed to keep Pokémon mastery on your mind all day.
First is a cute picnic set made up of two square containers, with a stylized Pokémon graphic on the lid. Hey, if every plant and animal in the
Pokémon universe is a Pokémon, does that mean that, when Ash and company eat lunch ...
Uh, on to the next item! It's totally cute and leads to no horrific revelations! The Pokémon Diamond & Pearl Super DX Onemuri Makura is just a cute pillow in the shape of either a sleepy Piplup or a sleepy Pikachu, wrapped up in a blanket thing.

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.
Giant advertising firms with international clients and extravagant budgets aren't the only people working hard to push their video games on you; small mom-and-pop stores also develop stratagems to attract the casual shoppers who haven't yet decided on what to buy. These sales-generating tactics can be something as simple as putting up a notice about in-demand consoles being in stock, or as annoying as hard-selling you on
preorders and magazine subscriptions.
One of our favorite schemes, and the topic for this week's Promotional Consideration installment, relies on setting up
homemade signs with creative interpretations of video gaming's most recognizable mascot, Mario. Join us past the post break for some of the interesting Japanese in-store displays that we've come across.

Those who might find themselves so engrossed in
Pokemon as to sit around in dark rooms pondering the state of trades that goes on in
Pokemon Diamond & Pearl may enjoy the satisfaction that comes from the dim glow of a computer monitor piercing said darkness. On that computer monitor is none other than the Global Trade Station.
The Global Trade Station keeps track of trading in the game on a worldwide scale, showing what trades are occurring in each territory of the game's release. Think your
Pokemon are worth more than someone is offering? Refer to the site (which, we might add, looks pretty darn spiffy).

This week has been a close race in determining what our theme game will be for tonight. And, if you're a regular here at Game Night, you're likely already forming a picture of what games are running at the top of the pack. So, let's not waste time. Head past the break and get all of the details you need.

Last night's Game Night was kind of a bust, we must admit. There wasn't that great a turnout and connection problems plagued the participants. But, hey, that's life; we can't control everything. But, there's always next week to look forward to. And, it's also time to reset the poll, so let's get to it!

Yes, we all know
Pokemon games move off the shelf like hotcakes at a lumberjack's convention, but could we have guessed that
Pokemon Diamond would be the best-selling game on
any system this year in North America? We wouldn't have guessed that ourselves, to tell the truth. Not only that, but both
Pokemon Diamond and
Pokemon Pearl have already sold 3 million copies in the U.S. alone.
Would you have guessed the game would do this well? How many copies do you think will sell before the end of the year? Tell us what's on your mind.

The DS can't always be on top when it comes to sales numbers. Sometimes, we must step gracefully aside and allow someone else to share the spotlight. As long as that "someone else" is also manufactured by Nintendo, however ... then things are
alllllright. Considering our trusty handheld had only one title in the top ten games sold in July --
Pokémon Diamond, which rang in at #7 -- moving another 400,000 units is pretty great. At least, it's better than those other guys, which is what really matters.

We can't wait to see what happens this holiday season. We have a feeling things are going to get crazy.

We hate GameStop.
But, there's no getting around the need for such a place. With other retail chains only stocking mainstream titles, gamers need a place to go where they can have a wider selection of all things they need for their favorite hobby. It doesn't mean the employees there have to ask you 18 different times before you leave the store if you want to pre-order something, though.
Our own personal dislikes aside, the company is doing things right, as
Pokemon Diamond & Pearl (along with other high-profile titles) were responsible for almost a 586 percent growth in revenue during the second quarter of this year. If we were to actually think about how much real monies that translates into, we'd probably have to find the tallest building near us and jump off.
Would you like to put $5 down on something and reserve it? Would you like to now?
Would you like to
now?
[Thanks, Lucious!]

You now have the opportunity to get some virtual collectibles from
Pokemon developers GAME FREAK, for the low, low cost of one Ponyta. Junichi Masuda, director of GAME FREAK, art director Ken Sugimori, and battle director Shigeki Morimoto have put 30 Psyducks each up for trade on
Diamond and Pearl's Global Trade Station.
From the 19th to the 23rd, and from the 26th to the 30th, any Ponyta offered in trade for a Psyduck with no preference for gender or level may net you one of the developers' Psyducks. If you're a jerk and you want a Ponyta, now would be a good time to put your Psyducks up for trade. Jerk.

Reader Andrea sent us pictures of her
Pokemon DS Lite cozies, which are either knit or crocheted-- we can't tell the difference. They're big yarn knots in interesting shapes, in any case. She made a
Pikachu and a Mew, both of which open up at the neck like Pez dispensers to allow access to the cozied DS inside.
Suffice it to say that, were we normal people and not, you know,
DS Fanboy, we're pretty sure this would be the first time we felt the desire to hug a DS. But we feel that way every time we hear the words
Contra 4.
They've got
tails! There's just no resisting that. In fact, we can't stand to look at our
stupid tailless cases anymore, and we think we're just going to toss them in the garbage.

If you've been considering picking up
Pokemon, now is the time to do it. Like, today. Amazon.com is offering
Pokemon Pearl as their Deal of the Day, for $20. Considering that
Fire Red and
Leaf Green are
also $20, this is a killer deal.
We doubt the supply is going to hold out for the whole day (or the whole time it's taking us to write this), so ask yourself right now if you want hundreds of hours of intensely complicated role-playing in a kid-friendly package. Alternately, ask yourself just
how cute you think Pikachu is:
awww cute or
buy stuff cute? You can consider your position re: dropping $20 on some Pokemans while we serenade you with the soothing sounds of the Pokerap.

There's a clear divide at the Fanboy office between those who've actually played through a
roguelike game and the rest of us who've never been able to boast such bravery. The
dungeon crawl veterans have the best parking spots, use the newest computers, and even get to cut in front of everyone in the lunch line.
Whenever one of us who hasn't meddled with the genre walks past the "popular" table in the cafeteria,
some jerk inevitably sticks their leg out to trip us. As we push ourselves back up, searching for our glasses amongst the mess of food spilled from our plastic trays, the group of bullies howl with raucous laughter. We find our glasses and put them on just in time to see our crush look away in disgust.
After years of cowering, we've decided that it's time to finally tackle the roguelike genre. Seeing Japan's latest commercial for
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Time Exploration Team and
Darkness Exploration Team was just what we needed to convince us. Both games look adorable enough, and from what we've heard, they're not as difficult as most other dungeon crawl titles! It won't be long before we'll be able to stand up to those roguelike ruffians! Drink some milk, do a bunch of push-ups, and join us past the post break for the video.

This yellow silicone DS Lite cover beats the "real"
Pikachu DS Lite in four ways that we can think of:
- It's totally got color art on it
- This actually prevents damage, encouraging us to play it more rather than hide it in a safe deposit box
- It creates that two-tone look that we apparently love, and
- You can get it in a reasonable manner, for $13.
The last one is the real big deal. There was basically no chance of us
submitting an application to the Pokemon Center in Japan,
getting extremely lucky, and then shelling out for the Lite. This way, we can cover our normal DS Lite in the equivalent of a Pikachu DS Lite Halloween costume. Play-Asia is shipping the Silicon Cover (Pokemon Yellow) for $12.90. Despite the name, we're pretty sure it's made of silicon

UK gamer Drew Walters somehow managed to procure one of these
special edition systems, the lucky git, and took several photos while he unboxed the yellow treasure. Considering that the handheld was only supposed to be available to a limited amount of people who submitted an application at Japan's Pokémon Centers, we expect that a great deal of shenanigans were involved, and not to mention
crazy bucks.
We can all agree that
the Pikachu DS Lite is quite yellow, but what sort of yellow is it? Drew broke it down on his blog: "It's the same yellow as Post-it notes,
The Simpsons, Lego men, and my bedroom wall." See for yourself, past the post break!
