Wear this Bob-omb jewelry at a safe distance

Craftster user False_desire calls herself a "one woman jewelry workshop," a pretty accurate description considering her prolific output. Wading through her assortment of Rainbow Brite, Care Bears and Hello Kitty creations, we stumbled across these adorable (non-exploding) Bob-omb earrings and matching necklace.

Hand-sculpted from FIMO (damn fiddly stuff, let us tell you), both of these cute one-offs are available now on eBay (here and here), so grab 'em while you still can!

US gets equipped with Mega Man Star Force cartoon

Mega Man
series fans have something else to look forward to in the near future, besides the never-ending stream of spinoffs and sequels. Viz Media has licensed the anime adaptation of the latest spinoff, Mega Man Star Force (Ryuusei no Rockman in Japan) for US audiences.

The story is some baffling thing about a human kid merging with an alien entity called Omega-Xis to become Mega Man, which we're sure will make more sense after we play the game. It makes us a little nostalgic for the sparse robot vs. robot storyline of the original Mega Man series, but not the original Mega Man cartoon. Do you think the cartoon will be good enough to promote a game with three versions? We make fun of Capcom for all the Mega Man overload, but we're huge fans and will no doubt fill our TiVos with episodes of this series.

Explore the heavens with your handheld

Still in the alpha stage of development, Constellations DS already looks like a useful tool for amateur astronomers. The homebrew application combines the portability of a star chart with the lighted display and interactivity of a notebook computer. Users will be able to zoom in and out of clusters, panning the night sky with their styli. Tapping a particular star displays its name, position, and other relevant information.

Only thirteen constellations have been mapped so far, but developer Nameless plans to add 75 more. Future builds of the program will also use the date and your location to lay out an approximation of how the night sky should look. If anything, Constellations DS serves as a great excuse to escape the light-congested city limits and spend a warm evening outside.

Jet Impulse looks really, really hot

TakeoffA Nintendo-developed dogfighter, Jet Impulse, has recently opened their official website for perusal. The game formerly known as DS Air is, for the moment, Japanese-bound only; this will change, however, when we threaten Nintendo with deadly force.

Two videos adorn the pages, highlighting both game mechanics and opening cinematic. We've been hankering for more air since Star Fox Command ended so very quickly; hopefully, this title can make the trip stateside before long.

The REAL party is in my DS

We're not based in Kansas City, which isn't so much a bad thing, but it does keep us from receiving certain newspapers on a regular basis. One writer for the Kansas City Star had a few things to say about the DS Lite and a certain game for it known as Super Princess Peach. Stating that she "never thought I'd be one of those people who would choose a video game over a party," Jeneé Osterheldt has first-hand felt the fever we all so frequently fail from: Nintendo fever.

So whether you want to consider her personal experience a downward spiral of self-loathing and disgust akin to how one gets hooked on, and subsequently dies from, drugs or a clever look at the appeal of gaming in the modern world, it's all an interesting read.

What are you playing: Electroplankton edition

We weren't lying when we said this would become a regular Friday feature like how it originated at Xbox 360 Fanboy. So, another week, another asking. What are you playing? Like we said last week, we recently received Electroplankton and Star Fox: Command.

As much as we'd like to say Corneria is saved and currently defended against all ne'er-do-wells, we have to admit that it has been hard to put down Electroplankton. Our favorite gametype in Performance Mode is currently pictured.

Screenshot explosion: Star Wars Lethal Alliance

While it is wide-known fact that many Bothans died trying to get their hands on blue prints for the Death Star, another lesser-known Twi'lek named Rianna Saren and her droid Zeeo also attempted to acquire them.

Set in the timeframe between episode III and IV, Star Wars: Lethal Alliance is already known to feature some form of multiplayer (cross your fingers for Wi-Fi) and familiar faces from the universe such as Darth Vader and Kyle Katarn. The folks at Ubisoft have not revealed any more information on the game, however as tightly as they closed their fist, several screenshots slipped through their fingers over to IGN.

New trailer for Star Trek: Tactical Assault

A new trailer for Star Trek: Tactical Assault has hit the net. As you may already know, the Star Trek franchise was recently taken over by Bethesda (those guys who did that Elder Scrolls game) and this title is their first entry into the series. While the title has received far more press and raised eyebrows alike on the major consoles and PC, that's not to say that the DS version is without its appeal.

On the DS, the game is to feature 2 full campaigns to play through, as well as the usual real-time strategy and tactics elements accompanying a title with such a ... well, title. The game is to feature head-to-head multiplayer (sorry, no Wi-Fi connect), five playable races (Romulan Warbird FTW) and a skirmish mode. Star Trek: Tactical Assault is to release this Fall.

Nintendo celebrates Star Fox in Animal Crossing

K-Man, whom you may remember from a previous Animal Crossing update, recently wrote in to us documenting his latest free gift from Nintendo. The fact that Nintendo would keep giving away free gifts in the game to keep players active in the game as well as one of its players constantly maintaining their town just reiterates how awesome a game this is. The latest gift given our by Nintendo is none other than an Arwing. The letter from Nintendo reads:

"Dear K-man,
Star Fox Command stats are live! We were going to give you Slippy, but take this instead!
"

Congrats on the free gift K-Man and all you other readers out there should make sure you let us know how your town is doing. We're always watching, always listening...

Star Fox Command developer interview

Producer Takaya Imamura and Director Dylan Cuthbert on the recently-released DS game Star Fox Command conducted an interview with RMC over at Go Nintendo. The interview mainly revolves around the development phase for the game. When asked about taking the game "off rails," Imamura commented that the portable nature of the DS begged for a change.

RMC - When it comes to the StarFox series, many of the entries have been on-rails shooters. How did the decision come about for StarFox Command to break from tradition, and go with free roaming game play?

Imamura – The main reason relates back to the fact that this is on a portable device. We wanted something that the player would be able to control their playtime. With StarFox Command, the player can choose to go through and just hit the core enemies and complete the levels quickly, or they can go through slowly and take out all of the enemies. Giving the player the ability to pick up and stop when they wanted was one reason to take the game off rails. As you know, on rails has a definite beginning and ending point, which does allow the player that freedom to adjust the time they are playing.

Nothing new comes from the interview, but it's a nice long read and insightful look into how Star Fox Command came to be the game you know and love. Or hate, if that's your cup of tea.

Metareview: Star Fox Command

One of the highest-profile Wi-Fi titles of the year has finally released and the critics were quick to offer up their opinions. Generally, the game has seen a fair amount of praise, however critics have mentioned that the title's multiplayer is not exactly on par with the game's single-player experience.

The scores are as follows:

  • IGN - 80%: "It's at the very least a great start to the franchise. Bump up the difficulty, add some variety to the missions, bring back the forced-scrolling on-rails levels and the wingman-in-danger elements in a sequel and you'll have yourself the ultimate Star Fox adventure."
  • Gamespot - 75%: "Star Fox Command has great controls and introduces a strategic layer that's fairly interesting. However, the random feel of the story battles and the frantic multiplayer mode don't make the most of this game's solid foundation, which might cause nostalgic fans to long for the series' good old days."
  • 1UP - 70%: " None of the strategy elements that comprised the core of the single-player game are in multiplayer -- how cool would it have been to battle for strategic positions and race to key items on the overhead map against friends? How loudly does this game scream for a custom map editor? Should Command see a sequel, competitive strategic multiplayer ought to be a big part of it."
We've heard from the critics, now how about the readers?

Star Fox Command Comic-Con video

ShadowDoubleX, an attendee of Comic-con, was kind enough to post this video of StarFox Command. His excitement was clearly too great because the video is a little jittery but still appreciated. We see a few battle shots and a little animation here and its lookin' good. Basically, you shoot stuff, it blows up. Perfect!

[Thanks, ShadowDoubleX!]

Starfox Command screens and info

In their ongoing coverage of Starfox Command, Famitsu has revealed some interesting tidbits about the game as well as unveiled several new screenshots and game art. Turns out Fox is all alone now, with his comrades having gone on to greener pastures. With Falco off exploring the vast regions of space, Peppy taking up the role of a general, and Slippy having found the toad of his dreams, Fox continues to fight the good fight alone. This game also marks the return of Star Wolf.

Gameplay will be handled via two distinctly different modes. In the map mode, you're charged with using the stylus to trace out a route to your designation, encountering enemies along the way, which then takes you into the adventure mode where you can fly your plane and take out said enemies.

Joystiq: How the star system works.

Have you been a long-time poster at Joystiq or one of its awesome network-affiliated sites, only to see others have stars placed next to their name (or negatives) and wonder what exactly dictates that rewarding or stripping of star(s)?  Well, Joystiq's Vlad Cole has broken down the star system to show you exactly how it works. These guidelines apply to all the Joystiq network sites:
  • Value: Does the comment enhance the topic at hand and add new perspective to the discussion? Is it a good question or interesting insight?
  • Impartiality: This is hard, especially for Fanboy sites such as this, but as much as we loudly proclaim this system to be the superior, it detracts from the discussion at hand. It's OK to be touched with Fanboyitis, however try to curb it as best as you can as to not damage the topic at hand whilst commenting.
  • Civility: This is just common sense. We all have opinions and want to share them, however as human beings we have the ability to exercise civility, even during the most heated debate.
  • Other: Humor, wit, and bribes of cold, fresh chocolate milk. We like chocolate milk.
As such, these are the guidelines followed when hiring Bloggers for the network (you have no idea how much chocolate milk it took for me to get the job), so keep that in mind should you one day wish to kill me and take my place. Vlad is answering as many questions as he can over at Joystiq, but if you post any questions here, we'll try the best we can to answer.
