Japanese hardware sales: Now with added numerical goodness!

Several readers suggested last week that, for the next sales chart update, I should increase the general number of, uh, numbers. Since you all asked so nicely and threatened me so politely, I have done just that.  In addition, I'll post a summary sales chart at the end of each month - I don't want to clutter things up too much in the weekly updates. Right, on to the Japanese hardware sales charts for the week ranging from 10 April to 16 April. The ranking, according to number of units sold, is a follows:
  • DS Lite: 140,969 13,762
  • Phat DS: 37,204 12,621
  • PS2: 27,549 1,347
  • PSP: 26,340 4,225
  • GBA SP: 6,372 1,161
  • Game Boy Micro: 3,676 573
  • Xbox 360: 1926 14
  • Gamecube: 1,080 144
  • GBA: 46 64
  • Xbox: 30 16
Lots of mean, red arrows this week.  Just about every platform fared a little worse, with the DS Lite taking the biggest dive. Luckily, all those other platforms will break its fall at the bottom.

1. Woah! Has the 360 ever outsold the GCN in Japan before this week? Surprising...I wonder if it has to do with the launch of FFXI on 360 this week, since this is last week's chart.

2. I'm liking the arrows.

THe PSP is now showing signs of death, shall we give it a few more weeks?

3. DS Lite took the biggest dive? Why aren't you judging by percentages rather than absolute numbers?

The DS Lite sales dropped by 9% or so, while the GBA plunged 60%. Not surprisingly--who's still buying the GBA?

4. I really love the little arrows, such a small detail really helps a lot!

I also like the chart idea. Simple, yet effective.

I agree with Joe though, The DS was only down by 9%, and sales WILL go up by tons once the Lite hits America.

5. Yeah, poor PSP. I mean, it hurts me because I like Sony, yet not more than Nintendo. PSP is being outsold by PS2. Poor bastard. :(

6. Looks like the "Mother 3's out next week!" surge to me.. I wonder how many people are buying Micro's, who already own DS's? And which are buying the Micro 'cos it's smaller, vs Those who don't want the game sticking out a bit on their new DSLite, vs Those who plain forgot it'd play in their DSLite ;)

7. Hmmm not to be picky... but if the arrows had percentages instead of #s, that'd be EVEN better...

8. Hmm...consider it done.

9. I don't understand this chart completely. The first number is the number of units sold that week? The second is the number sold in the week following? But what are the arrows for, do they show change in place? Impossible since the #1 system both weeks is still #1, and it's got a down arrow. Is it total sold? The second number on each entry is down on every point, so why are there two green "up" arrows then?

Posted at 11:44AM on Apr 25th 2006 by John H.

10. John, the first number is how much were sold this week. The second number is the difference between what was sold this week and what was sold last week. The arrow shows whether it's a positive (an increase in sales) or a negative (a decrease in sales) difference.

Hope that helps?
