Japanese hardware sales: The Lite fantastic

Usually, this paragraph is reserved for detailing some sort of absurd story that eventually concludes with me obtaining the latest Japanese sales chart. This week, I thought I'd try something completely different and jump straight to the point, deftly dodging all the nonsense that merely ends up delaying you from getting to the information you so desperately desire. "The readers are sure to appreciate that," I said to myself. I immediately started working on this post, vowing that I wouldn't waste reams and reams of text on an inconsequential setup to what is likely to be a pretty weak joke.

Japanese sales chart for the week ranging from 27 March to 2 April, here we come! The ranking, according to number of units sold, is a follows:
  • DS Lite: 149,371
  • Phat DS: 59,903
  • PSP: 36,943
  • PS2: 33,301
  • GBA SP: 6,732
  • Xbox 360: 3,258
  • Game Boy Micro: 2,992
  • Gamecube: 1,492
  • GBA: 151
  • Xbox: 68
The DS Lite is still obliterating the rest of the chart and shows no signs of relenting. The only interesting thing this week is that the Xbox 360 seems to have gained a little sales momentum, moving up a few spaces and overtaking the Game Boy Micro and the Gamecube in the process.

1.
Let's hope the sales of the Lite are not effected too much once the Revolution comes out.

I guess if Nintendo allows connectivity between the two (Rev and DS) then it will maintain steady DS sales.

2. why are there never any stats like this for U.S. sales? Is it in some way more difficult to obtain information like this in the U.S.?

3. Why would anybody buy the original DS? what a waste of money.

4. Ok, how the heck did the DS Lite sell 4,531 unit more than all other hardware COMBINED (I know its been like this for a while, but these long stretches of insane sales seems like the entire population of Japan and some of the rest of the world will have the DS Lite in a matter of weeks)? I know you have to probably include people who own the DS and are "upgrading" to the Lite, but DANG. Is it THAT good? Does importing count in that number too, 'cause it's been very high for a while now?

5. so at new years nintendo claimed to have sold 14.5 million total. in the weeks since then averaging 100,000 per week the DS has sold over 1,000,000 units just in japan.

Looks for sony to maintain their supposed sales lead by dump another million PSP's onto the store shelves in the next couple weeks.

6. Anyone looking to buy the "crystal cocaine" white DS Lite? I live in Japan and have an extra one that I am selling. It was bought 03/31 along with one that my wife was so kind as to pick up for me as a surprise (hence my selling this one). It is new in the box, only removed once to check that it works.

Nintendo DS Lite (white) x1
Wrist strap (white) x 1
AC Adapter x 1
Battery x 1
Stylus x 2

Price: $190 US + $20 US shipping (3-4 business days from Japan).
Payment: PayPal.

If you are intersted, drop me a line here: "blankoboy ATNOSPAM hotmail". Thanks.

7. "4. Ok, how the heck did the DS Lite sell 4,531 unit more than all other hardware COMBINED"

Try one. Look at the games coming out in the next 6 months.

"I know you have to probably include people who own the DS and are "upgrading" to the Lite, but DANG. Is it THAT good?"

Actually it's LEAST likely to be them.. cuz at least THOSE guys already have DS's.. they're busy playing with it. It's the PSP owners who held out.. now that there's a 'neat' looking DS they're going apeshit.

"Does importing count in that number too, 'cause it's been very high for a while now?"

Sure it does. That would be a japanese sale.

8. Amazing, the DS sold 622,680 units to the PSP's 142,978 during the same period.

That is of difference of almost half a million units. Unbelievable.

10. Am I the only one who actually like the original DS? I loved the feeling of the thing and the shape... I don't really care much at all for the new DSlite. I think it looks even worse to me...
