Ace Attorney drives Capcom sales in Japan

Capcom has reported Q1 2008 net sales of 14.3 billion Yen (120 million USD), which are up 35% percent compared to the same period last year. This surge in profit is attributed to two titles: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition and Gyakuten Saiban 4. It makes sense, considering the ridiculous popularity of the franchise in Japan.

Personally, we hope the franchise receives entry after entry after entry. The new lawyer-em-up genre created by Capcom is one we know we can't live without now. So, Capcom, keep making the games and we'll keep buying them.

Gyakuten Saiban 4 soundtrack in Japan on 6/27

Anyone care to join us in a mournful, dejected "OBJECTION!"? We don't necessarily object to the release of a soundtrack CD for Gyakuten Saiban 4-- quite the opposite! We object to the Japan-only status of the release, and the similar lack of availability of its counterpart game. We haven't even heard the music from the game to know if it's worth buying, but the two US-released games have had great music. We just ... need more stuff with cartoon lawyers on it, because we love the cartoon lawyer games so much!

While we're throwing useless objections out, we'd like to register our disgust with the prices of Japanese CD's. 3150 yen ($26) is actually on the low end of CD prices.

Gyakuten Saiban 4 gets the French preview treatment

We've been up to our elbows in Ace Attorney-related stuff lately, and if you know us at all, you know that makes us extraordinarily happy. With Trials and Tribulations headed our way soon (or the Japanese DS release of Gyakuten Saiban 3 even sooner), we're focused heavily on the next installment in the series, Gyakuten Saiban 4 -- the one without the man himself, Phoenix Wright, taking the lead as the title lawyer.

A lot of longtime fans are a little concerned about the tone of the series with this switch, but the folks at Jeux France assure us that while we may be faced with a new character (with brand new abilities!), the game is business as usual. In fact, it may even be better than usual; the preview intimates that the cases are more interesting and sport even better production than those in the earlier games, and we can't object to that.

Capcom registers "Apollo Justice" trademark

Don't object to our speculation, but Capcom has registered a trademark that sounds like it may have relevance in our daily lives. "Apollo Justice" ... hmm. The first name is taken from a mythological figure, one associated with law and truth, and the last name is also legal-themed. Oh, we got it-- this is the name of the next Resident Evil game.

Oh, or Ace Attorney. "Apollo Justice" would be a pretty good name for Odoroki Housuke, the protagonist of Gyakuten Saiban 4. And if that's what the trademark is for, then it's a good sign for those of us hoping for a localized version.

Capcom to Japanese TV: "Take that!"

Well, this is just about the coolest marketing campaign ever; and, of course, after reading that, you'll be able to guess that it's for Japan only. Also, if you're familiar with our site, you should have no problem guessing what game it promotes.

Gyakuten Saiban 4, the latest entry in Capcom's Phoenix Wright/Ace Attorney series, doesn't really need any more marketing, but we aren't complaining. Capcom will be running a 5-10 minute Gyakuten Saiban TV drama, which presents a case for viewers to solve. Later, the solution will appear on the Gyakuten Saiban 4 website. If any of our Fanboy friends are located in Japan, we hope they'll watch next week and tell us about it!

Gyakuten Saiban 4 in the subway (and in our hearts)

If we had to walk past this every day, we're pretty sure we would just never be able to put the DS down. For once, we're actually a little glad that awesome video game ads aren't everywhere here. Nah, we're not fooling anyone. We would love to see this stuff! And it looks like Capcom loves to show it to us, because they are all about promoting Gyakuten Saiban 4 -- even in the subway. Probably because this franchise is huge.

New Gyakuten Saiban 4 screens

We're having a pretty hard time coping with our Gyakuten Saiban withdrawals. Ever since we learned that we wouldn't be able to play the Japanese release in English, we've had to turn to alternate means to get our daily allowance of fake Japanese law. We refresh the GS4 website obsessively, play the translated demo until it hits question-mark land, and shout "OBJECTION" at every opportunity that is even a little appropriate.

We found some screens on Famitsu to torture ourselves with. They show the intro to the second case, a witness in Chapter 1, and Chapter 2's defendant. If you want to make yourself feel bad about the lack of Ace Attorney in your life, then by all means, have a look. If you can't handle the wait, we suggest trying to put the whole thing out of your mind.

Gyakuten Saiban 4 wallpaper

In addition to Capcom's official Gyakuten Saiban 4 page, retailer Tsutaya has their own, with the same screenshots, character art, and story information as that on the Capcom page. We saw on Dengeki Online that the Tsutaya page had a new GS4 Flash game up, and we got excited. Turns out it's a personality quiz that tells you which character you're most similar to, which is neat, but it's also totally in Japanese and not really something we can recommend.

Poking around the site a little more, we found this sharp wallpaper featuring new hero Odoroki Housuke, and figured that you would enjoy it! Put it on your desktop and start memorizing the title kanji. It's a good first step toward learning enough Japanese to play the game!
