You can take it with you: Nintendo handheld retrospective

Tomorrow is the big day -- Nintendo's E3 2008 media briefing. Will there be a new DS? A new handheld altogether? A new array of DS Lite colors instead? Nearly anything is possible, and while we wait, bouncing up and down on our toes and struggling to remember to breathe through the excitement, it's a good time to look back at the history of Nintendo's handhelds. From the extensive Game & Watch collection to a few portables you may have forgotten, Nintendo has a rich and storied handheld history, and it's one we celebrate every day -- just not like this.

Step forward into the past

iPhone games priced cheaper than DS titles

With the recent hubbub over Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, many are wondering if it will threaten the market dominance that Nintendo enjoys with their DS handheld. Even though Forbes thinks Apple has a chance at dethroning the DS, we're realists and know that just isn't possible. But, then the price point for iPhone games was revealed and we got a tad bit worried.

Sure, games sell the system, but the titles available on the iPhone and iPod Touch will go for 17-18 Euros (which comes to about $25-$28, less than Nintendo's first-party titles), according to LemonQuest CEO Ignacio Cavero. It's not much, but it's something, and definitely a lot more noticeable when compared to Square Enix games, which often debut at a $34.99 price point. But, we could also see even cheaper stuff, because Apple is leaving the final pricing up to the publishers.

What do you all think? Will price play a big role here? Or, are you waiting on some games before you jump to any conclusions?

Do want: complete Game & Watch collection

If you're currently sitting on $4,000 worth of spare change, we have a purchase to recommend to you. A UK-based collector has just placed his the entire collection of 59 Game & Watch handhelds on eBay, along with the rare so-called "60th" model.

$4,000 is a big outlay, and not all of these are boxed, but complete collections of anything don't come along every day -- especially complete collections of something as desirable as Game & Watch handhelds.

Poll results: Playing favorites

In the midst of our celebration of all things Zelda, we asked you to choose, once and for all, your favorites from the franchise (up to, but not including Phantom Hourglass). It was a hard fight, but as many might have guessed, Ocarina of Time snatched the console title away from A Link to the Past. The handheld fight was a little closer -- skip on past the break to see the results of that wrestling match -- but votes were very much weighed in favor of two of the five titles, whereas votes on the console games were more spread out.

The final results might not have been too surprising when it comes to the winner, but the fact that every single game got at least a few votes certainly is. Now that's the mark of a good franchise!

DS Daily: Casual games

The above is a photo from EA's Sharon Knight's opening keynote at the Women in Games conference, and it nearly comes complete with an implied question: do women love their PCs, their Wiis, their DS Lites and Phats, and their phones? Lately, the industry seems keen on making sure we know that women just love casual games, and when one combines that fact and the above slide, we can't help but wonder ... are the DS and the Wii branded with the idea that they're filled with nothing but casual games?

Certainly most of us have run into that attitude among the various fanboy communities; here, especially, we're frequently hit by that particular brand of troll what seems determined to convince everyone that the PSP is the only real handheld for anyone over the age of 12, and sales figures be damned. But forget all that -- overall, do you feel that most of the games on the DS casually-oriented? It's a handheld, after all, and part of the idea of a handheld is that it is casual. But does the DS go beyond that? Should it? After all, it's not just women who are playing casual games ....

DS Daily: The move to portability

Are you a longtime lover of handhelds, or new to the party? Personally, this blogger wasn't much of a handheld gamer until the PSP and the DS rolled around, because handhelds just weren't comfortable. With this generation, however, handheld gaming seemed to take a huge step up in everything from ergonomics to gameplay and graphics. Others, of course, are lifelong handheld devotees; to them, a gaming collection just isn't complete without some sort of portable device. How would you classify yourself?

DS Daily: The other guys

We're guessing that you're probably a little into the DS, since you're here and all. But that doesn't mean you can't dabble with the other guys -- specifically, the PSP. Are you rocking handhelds on both sides of the fence? We know some of you just like to collect consoles (gotta catch 'em all!), but others enjoy having options when it comes to handhelds. How about you? Are you Nintendo-only, or do you also have a PSP? But don't stop at the what -- give us all the whys, too. We crave them.

DS Daily: Toward handheld dominance

We've found that the amazing levels of awesome offered by the DS have led us to lean more toward handheld gaming than we did before. The DS is just so versatile (moreso even if you homebrew), and we never run out of games to play. In fact, we could use an extra ten hours or so a week just to dedicate to working on that stack of shrink-wrapped DS games! So we thought we'd ask if it was just us. Does the DS dominate your gaming experience, or do you spend more time on a console (perhaps this one)? If you owned handhelds in the past, do you play more or less often now than you did before the DS?

Handheld winter wonderlands

Is it cold outside? December just seems like it should be chilly, but no matter the weather outside, you can get cosy inside with Modojo's picks for the best winter wonderlands ever to fill a handheld screen with white stuff.

Unsurprisingly, Mario Kart DS pops up on the list, with its wintry stages. They're pretty, sure, but this blogger fears taking to the ice almost as much as she does the dreaded Rainbow Road, and a pox on whoever picked it at the last Mario Kart Game Night. A pox!

The full list does boast a few surprises, though The Legend of Zelda: The Oracle of Seasons (pictured) wasn't one of them.

[Thanks, Justin!]

Confirmed: BioWare to work their magic for the DS

It's official -- BioWare has declared that their new handheld division will be developing first for the Nintendo DS. We're not suprised (there's another handheld? The GBA?), but apparently many thought they might go with some Sony product.

Now all that's left is the debate over what property the Canadian developer might bring to the DS. Though BioWare is behind a bevy of beefy and beloved RPGs, the possibility of an all new game is still out there. We'll bring you details as they become available!

iPod games "no substitute" for DS

We could have told you that, Macworld! Looks like the handheld powerhouse of the DS (and some other system) is tempting even Apple to get into the game. As part of Apple's huge Showtime event, they announced not only a new video iPod, but games that can be purchased from iTunes for it as well, priced at $4.99. "Apple's been hard at work on new games for the iPod -- while it still may not be a substitute for a Nintendo DS or Sony PSP, the new iPod can play versions of popular casual games including Bejeweled, Mahjong, mini-golf, Pac-Man, Tetris, Cubis, Texas Hold 'Em, Vortex and Zuma ...."

For DS owners, this can't really compare. Those of us who enjoy the occasional casual game already have a few on the system, and the more tech-savvy DS owners can cook up just about anything they want with their homebrew powers. It's hard to gauge exactly which market Apple is trying to snag here. We can only speculate that Apple is going to try to hit mobile gaming where it lives, by offering easy downloads and a better interface. We so often hit the five instead of the six, after all. And who knows -- for those folks out there who use their PSPs primarily for media and only the occasional game, this may tempt them out of the Sony camp.

So who's planning on snagging Bejeweled 2 or Pac-Man just to see how it plays? We're pretty sure Apple can't tempt us away from our Tetris, but some of the others may be worth a go.
