Rumor: DS to play a role in Super Paper Mario

What's this -- a DS in Super Paper Mario? Could this beautiful image indicate that we'll soon be seeing more of the vaunted DS-Wii connectivity that we've been waiting for? Since it says the DS is "awaiting upgrade," we can't help but think that's what it could be! But maybe we're reading too much of our own hopes and dreams into this simple image.

Nintendo Fanboy reader David was kind enough to let us know about this shot, taken around the kitchen on the first floor of Flipside, and we can't wait to dig around and see if there's anything else. After all, it could be a red herring, albeit one of the most tragic red herrings ever. If you see anything else, let us know ... and we'll be watching for any official announcements as well.

[Thanks, David!]

1. The DS in the shop is used as a computer terminal for recipes. Doesn't appear to have any connectivity features. It doesn't get turned on until later in the game, hence "Awaiting upgrade."

2. Wasn't a GBA SP used to represent Mario's communication device in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door? I don't think the next Nintendo handheld showing up in the next Paper Mario is shocking or significant.

3. A side note - shouldn't Wiifanboy be a blog at the bottom instead of PS3?

4. I think Nintendo learned its lesson with CON-NEC-TIVITY! in the last generation, as a lot of people didn't own both the GBA and the GCN. Therefore, the game developers didn't want the ones without the GBA to feel like they were missing anything, and the added features for the GBA felt tacked on or like a novelty. Plus, it's very expensive to get 4 GBAs and connector cables in the (very likely) case that you don't have 4 friends with GBAs, just to play Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles in multiplayer mode. It's the same reason why I hardly ever get to play DS games multiplayer (offline), as the only people I know with a DS live very far away.

In short, I don't think Nintendo will repeat the mistake of "connectivity" with the Wii/DS, because no one wants to plop down $150 for an extra controller.

5. Given the phanominal selling rate of the DS, I don't think that's a problem this gen, tbh.

6. That's true, but even if 50% of Wii owners also own a DS, then you still have to listen to the other 50% whine about how they have to drop $150 to access all the extra features. So the features will be pared down so no one feels like he is missing anything. IMHO, bundle the DS with the Wii. =)

7. greatslack, was that a Schoolhouse Rock! reference (I'm thinking of e-lec-tricity)? If so, you win my Internet for today.
