DS Daily: The great war

No, we don't mean World War II, but considering every third game made these days revolves around that great war, we can forgive you if you made that assumption. No, we're talking about the never-ending conflict between the DS and the PSP, and we're wondering: where does it come from? Sure, we see a lot of fanboys arguing back and forth about the home consoles. We've heard thousands of iterations on the 360-vs-PS3-vs-Wii theme, but the whole PSP vs. DS issue is somewhat different. It seems to be a created beast.

Oh, don't get us wrong. We're not above ribbing the other guys occasionally, just as they'll sometimes poke fun at us. That's just part of owning any piece of video game hardware, it seems. But in reality, the "war" isn't very vicious ... though to look at advertising and the media, one would think that DS fans are at war with PSP fans, and DS fans have always been at war with PSP fans.

Maybe we just have stars in our eyes. This recent VG Cats strip certainly makes us giggle; that poor, weepy PSP just looks so forlorn. But is it an accurate depiction? You tell us.

1. As one of those lucky (read spoilt) gamers who tends to have too much money on their hands, i picked up both a PSP and a DS.

Now technically PSP is way ahead, but when has fancy graphics a good game made?

The DS is what comes with me when i go away. Its such a popular item in my house i had to pick up a second one so i could game without my brothers hogging the thing.

Games are always what sells a console. Sony need to remember that, and have peripheral media features as what they should be, peripheral.

PSP and PS3 suffer the same ideology.

Well back to FF III for me... :P

2. I am also an owner of both a DS and a PSP. Frankly, I'm more or a PSP fanboy than DS. The DS is a great system with some awesome games, but I would much rather bring my PSP on long trips. This is due to what you can do with a PSP as opposed to DS. Built in music, video, and picture support are a big plus. If I get tired of playing games, I just pop in a movie or zone out listening to music. As for games, I'm really disappointed with the games that have been coming out for the DS recently. I really enjoy most of the games I have for the DS, but I've already beaten them and have no interest in replaying them. The PSP had a bad start, but is really coming through. There are some really good games that have been coming out for the PSP, and they have some great games coming out soon. Am I going to get rid of my DS? God, no. There are some great games for it. But I likely won't use it until some better games come out for it.

Oh, and before someone mentions battery life, I have two batteries that I switch between. It gives me comparable battery life to a DS.

3. Aww, sad cartoon. Poor little PSP. sniffle. I don't have a PSP...if I got one it would be for compliations and rereleases of rare PS1 games -- none of the original content interests me.

4. It's pretty clear that the two handhelds cater to different audiences. The PSP bashers, for the most part, have never actually played one--but will re instigate things already said on the web. If you can afford to get both, go for it. If you can't, enjoy both handhelds: they offer great games.

5. I also own both, and I like them both for different reasons.

I like the DS for puzzlers, MKDS and the games have a nostalgic feeling that I love.

I like the PSP for some PS1 conversions and some games. The technical quality of it also appeals to me. And, heck, I'm a Castlevania lover and there's a Castlevania coming. Gotta catch 'em all.

To me, there's no war. I play what I want to play in that moment. A quick Picross? DS. Some sneaking around in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops? PSP.

Guess I have a big heart, so I can love two systems. Now, if only I got more time to play them more...

6. MegaMan Powered Up's map maker alone was more than enough to make me consider getting a PSP. Then Maverick Hunter X and Katamari rolled (ha!) onto the scene, further tempting me. Tales of Eternia broke me. Dracula X Chronicle will own my playtime when it's released.

In the end though, I barely play my PSP in comparison to my DS. But then again, my Wii, 360 and PS2 combined don't see as much use as the DS does (OUENDAAAN!!), so that's not saying much.

7. Not to be ms. smarty pants but the Great War refers to WWI not WWII. Oh and to answer your question, I love my DS but that's because I'm a whole lot more attracted to their titles (Phoenix Wright, FFIII, New Super Mario), than to any given PSP title. I do admit that PSP's graphics are far superior to DS's.

8. What's funny is that the psp fans are killing it slowly themselves with the rampant pirating of the games. There is plenty of pirating on the DS but it sells more than enough software. I guess PSP fanboys love their system...to death.

9. i don't have a PSP but i've played it already from a friend and my cousin's...

the PSP lineup isn't that great for me even if there are titles i'd like to play.

but with the "annoyance" of firmware upgrades and so on, low battery life and a lackluster game lineup, especially when compared to the DS' lineup, i went out and bought myself a DS... never regret it at all.

getting a bit bored waiting for phantom hourglass to comeout, thou...
