Hori has done an okay job, though, in trying to come up with a viable solution to those lacking any kind of protection for their DS. It's sleek and looks like it not only protects, but is pretty functional as well. All it needs are some stickers of hearts and unicorns. Or maybe some Doraemon.

What is it made of though? Is it a hard plastic shell or silicon?

It doesn't look like it protects the hinges, isn't that the weakest part of the ds? just looks like another protect-by-adding-a-few-centimeters-of-plastic cases, I think the nerf ones work best.

It would be hard to protect the hinges without limiting how far it can open though. If they put plastic over the hinges, how are you supposed to open it?

The Nerf protective cases were a great idea for those of us who are clumsy or have kids with a DS. Have you seen the new Nerf travel case? It looks hilarious.
Here are the older ones

Can't seem to find the huge DS nerf travel-like case online though, you may see it in stores at Walmart or Target though, truely a sight to behold.

Aw I want one now. Too bad the closest thing we have to Wal Mart and Target in the UK is Asda. And all they sell are the shitty MadCatz stuff.
Wish we had something like you US do.

Well I've had this case on my ds lite (onyx) for a while and it works out great. I don't have a single scratch on my actual DS, just the case. Most people don't even notice there is a case on it until I hand it to them (and even then)! It's made of hard plastic, not silicon, and although the hinges aren't well protected, it has yet to come to any harm despite dropping it several times.
Although the picture is showing a black case on a white ds lite, there's a completely translucent case as well for the white ds.
I've only found these at japanese import shops (like Pink Godzilla), so you might want to check your city's international district if they have one.

I really want one of those. I just want something to keep the DS from getting scratched and scuffed without getting in the way of it's petite and sleek design and this is perfect. I especially like their DQM one (http://www.hori.jp/us/products/ndsl/dqmj_protector/index.html). Good substitute for those special edition DSes we almost never get.

I'm wondering if there's there anything like this for the Phat? I'm too poor to upgrade right now, unfortunately. =(

If you go for the clear white ones, you don't even need stickers. You can just print something out and stick it *under* the armor case to make your own DIY DS skin. ;)
End result is something like this: http://cafefiles.naver.net/data24/2007/5/12/298/dsc08530.jpg
But I assume the DS fanboy folks would probably appreciate this one more: http://cafefiles.naver.net/data9/2005/9/11/259/S2020042.jpg

Uh, turns out the links don't work if you just click them. C&P them to see. ;)

My protective case is very similar to the Hori one, but produced by Big Ben. It's translucent pink with glitter, it's a very subtle color so you can still see through it.
Here's the tip: I put a sheet with a nice picture (like hearts and unicorns, maybe :D) between the DS and the case. I used thin photo paper with a Hello Kitty print, and you can see the result here:

This way you dont have to deal with the stickers' glue when you get tired of the subject and you want to remove it.
