DS Daily: Would you gut a NES to create this?

This isn't the first time we've featured a wooden gaming system. Instead of a SNES, this time modders have turned a NES into a portable system, encasing the screen and hardware in a nice wooden frame. And to prove this modder means business, the portable NES is shown playing none other than badass title Contra.

What we would like to know is if you tried anything like this before and was it successful? Did you turn your NES into something much better? Share your experience(s) with us!

DS Daily: So close

There are some games that are almost perfect. They're so close! They've got an excellent learning curve, the graphics are amazing, the story is fantastic ... but there's one flaw that keeps it from being all it could be. Surely you've played a few of these on the DS. Maybe it's an interminable tutorial sequence that makes you want to bang your head against the wall, or a lot of wasted extra screens you have to wait through over and over (a particular peeve of this blogger's, but it didn't stop Professor Layton and the Curious Village from being awesome), or maybe the touchscreen just doesn't always work quite right, particularly at critical moments (hi2u, Puzzle Quest), and sometimes, they're just really, really hard.

At times, these little flaws detract from a game, and sometimes, the game is so good it just doesn't matter; after all, all games have some tiny flaw. But they're there, and we're sure you've noticed a few. Tell us about them!

DS Daily: Stellar soundtracks

Let's face it -- the DS isn't loved for its aural qualities. Still, there are some games that really outdo themselves in terms of music. A few that immediately come to us as examples are the Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban) games and Professor Layton. Yet, everyone has different musical tastes, so we wanted to see if you thought any DS games had soundtracks worth noting. If so, list them here!

DS Daily: Walkthroughs

We like being challenged by games, but sometimes if we're stuck in a particular spot for too long, we can get really frustrated. Then we have the inevitable, "Should I check a walkthrough?" debate, although our weak-willed selves will try to resist as long as possible.

What do you think about walkthroughs, though, and how often do you use them? Only when you're really stuck? Always, to make sure you get every item possible? Or, maybe even never, no matter how long you've been unable to progress?

DS Daily: Vitamin DS

CYBER Gadget recently unveiled their "Game Supple" (pronounced "suppli") line of nutritional supplements marketed at gamers. We won't ask you for your scientific opinion -- although hey, any nutritionists out there are welcome to speak up -- but we want to know: behind the lulz, do you think there's any merit here? Not necessarily to repackaging basic nutritional supplements to gamers, but to the idea of gearing your nutrition toward the kind of traits required for game performance? It seems like kind of an interesting idea, as long as you are sure to maintain a balanced diet and refrain from overdosing on riboflavin or something.

Oh, and Halo 3 "Game Fuel" totally doesn't count.

DS Daily: Return to Hope Hospital

Good old Trauma Center. Preposterous storyline, not even remotely medically accurate, and a difficulty curve with all the consistency of lumpy custard. But hey, despite its flaws, we quickly fell in love with Atlus' unconventional surgical sim. It was one of the very first DS titles to really use the touchscreen convincingly, and the execution was, on the whole, superb.

And now -- rejoice! -- there's a sequel planned, complete with improved surgical tools and a lower difficulty level for scalpel jocks like us. That's all well and good, but is there anything that you'd like to see done differently in Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2?

DS Daily: The fooling comes to an end

With yesterday being April Fools' Day, the internet was set ablaze with crazy rumors and fake news. DS Fanboy was even on hand with its own little something something to mark the occasion. Aside from telling you our most darkest fears, we broke news involving a certain Nintendo president and his theft (or, as he puts it, "discovery") of a rather large bag filled with popping corn.

Aside from that, we did manage to round up some of the best pranks the internet pulled yesterday, chronicling them all for your amusement. Who's joke was best? Personally, we couldn't stop playing that Space Invaders game over at Yahoo Japan, but that was just us.

What did you enjoy most on yesterday?

DS Daily: Sleep vs. shutdown

They each have their own uses, what with the sleep mode of the DS being a temporary means at pausing your game and shutting down the DS being a more finite halt in the title. Which do you use more?

For us, it has to be sleep mode. Sure, things come up as you're trying to play a DS game, but, for us, sleep mode shows a commitment to come back to that game, where shutting down is less of a commitment to come back as soon as possible to the game in question and more of a promise to walk away from the DS and watch TV or blog. So, which is more useful to you?

DS Daily: Oral fixation

While spending a little time with Professor Layton and the Curious Village recently, I discovered something -- when not actively using my stylus, it seems I have a habit of putting it in my mouth. I don't really chew on it, but rather, just hold it there with my lips. The stops and starts in Layton meant that I was often not doing much with it, but just studying the screen, which gave me the opportunity to realize where I was putting my poor stylus. Here's hoping I'm not alone in this weird habit ... am I?

DS Daily: Game hunting

It's always disappointing when you want to play a game, but can't find it anywhere (except maybe eBay for an absurd price). Have there been any DS games that you've had trouble locating? If so, what games are you disappointed that you've missed out on for such reasons? And, have you ever gone to great lengths in order to acquire one of the rarer DS games?

DS Daily: Viva variety

Tell us about your games library -- well, the DS portion.

Is it full of variety? Do you own a whole different assortment of games? (Perhaps some rhythm ones, some sports titles, a few RPGs, etc?) Or, can the games you own be lumped into one or two general categories?

Extra credit will be given to anyone who sends us their answer in graph and spreadsheet form. (Note: Not really! In fact, don't do that.)

DS Daily: Realism and the DS audience

Do you think there's no place for realistic games on the DS? It seems that some people do; when we spoke with Rob Hawkey, Game Director at Deep Fried Entertainment, in regard to MLB 2K8 Fantasy All-Stars, he seemed to think that realism is a recipe for failure when it comes to the handheld's audience. But, really, when has it been tried? For every Brothers in Arms or FIFA Soccer 08, we've got ten games like Elite Beat Agents, Phoenix Wright, and every Mario-themed game ever. This isn't to say we prefer one style over another -- it just means we have more of the latter to choose from, so we choose 'em.

Maybe we're over-generalizing. Here's what he said: "When you look at the most successful titles on the DS they tend to be titles that have experimented with new ways of engaging the user, rather than titles that rely solely on the strength of a license or established form of gameplay." And that's largely true, but it doesn't mean we wouldn't also appreciate games that strive for a realistic approach while utilizing the unique strengths of the DS. We appreciate that Deep Fried is trying to give us something unique rather than a port with Fantasy All-Stars; we'd rather see more emaciated, warped ballplayers and fewer half-assed Madden games, frankly. But it would also be interesting to see people not equating "unique" and "experimental" with "bright" and "cartoony."

But maybe it's just us.

DS Daily: Super Bangai-O Brawlers

There's a considerable number of DS games out there that we cherish, but Super Dodgeball Brawlers and Bangai-O Spirits must rank amongst our greatest obsessions.

By a happy coincidence, both titles recently released within days of one another in Japan, so the next question is obvious: as the U.S. still has a couple of months to wait for these gems, did you buckle under the pressure and import either? If so, we'll be happy to place our extreme envy to one side for the time being, and listen to your impressions! We're nice like that, see.

DS Daily: Give me my time back

Looking back at the DS games we've played so far this year, we're happy to say that we have yet to play a bad game. Sure, we don't get to play as much as you probably do, but to be almost 4 months in and not have played a single bad game is like a record. Hey, the DS does get better titles than any other console on average, however.

What about you all? Had a DS game disappoint so far this year? Have you been expecting something to be good, only to have your hopes dashed to the ground after playing it? Let us know!

DS Daily: Bored games

For us, not only is the DS the ultimate pick-up-and-go system, but it's also the ultimate pick-up system. Whenever we need a quick, fun bite of gaming, the DS is always there for us. And, thanks to its large library of games, we always have a couple of different DS games that we can pick up and kill our boredom immediately.

Do you have similar games on the DS you can rely on? Contra 4, perhaps? Maybe a little weed maintenance in Animal Crossing always manages to kill your boredom? What DS game (or games) do you look to in your time of need that can be turned on immediately for some fun? What is your go-to game?
