Rare says Viva Prerendering

Were you wondering how Rare would manage to cram the full Viva Piñata experience onto the DS? They've gone deep into their bag of tricks and pulled out a favorite Rare technique: prerendering. Like Killer Instinct and Donkey Kong Country, Viva Piñata uses 2D sprites made from 3D renders of Piñata characters. If it allows them to put the whole game on DS-- including achievements?-- and then add stuff like an "Episodes" mode that ties in to the TV show, then we say "prerender away."

If you want to read the news item that accompanies this single screenshot on Rare's website, you'll have to navigate to the "News" section. Annoying, right?

Jam Sessions gets the demo treatment

Advertising for Jam Sessions may be somewhat less than good, but that doesn't make the title less worthwhile -- nor does it detract from this hilarious E3 demo! We've tucked it away after the jump, but first you have to run the screenshot gauntlet. We're bad, bad people.

We do find some of the screens a little disturbing, however. Is that redheaded chick puking? We really only need so much rock-and-roll realism in our video games, thanks ....

E307: Mario Party DS media explosion

Well, call it a controlled explosion, kinda like a smart bomb -- but we're still pretty pleased to see some sweet new media from a brand new DS game. Er, mostly new, considering it's a franchise title. Still, Mario Party on the DS sounds like a winner, though we would prefer more than just local wireless play. Mario Party could only make Game Night that much more fun, amirite? Oh well, enough complaining -- check out the images in our gallery and the spankin' new trailer after the jump.

E307: Contra 4 media so hot it burns

My friends, we are at war ... with minivans. And let us be the first to tell you -- the minivans are losing. Hoorah!

Frankly, we take it back. We're not in any way upset any longer about the Nintendo keynote. In fact, we've already forgotten the keynote, because we all keep fainting at all the hotness that's been released on forthcoming DS games. These amazing new Contra 4 screens are just the beginning.

Let's all celebrate these screens by taking off our shirts and flexing a few muscles! Well, all you fellas in the audience, anyway. This blogger will be skipping that part in favor of simply drooling on the gallery.

Fresh Nanostray 2 screens

While we can honestly say we've never played the first Nanostray game, every bit of media that pops up for Nanostray 2 causes us to wonder if that was a mistake or not. And, you know, it makes us want to play Nanostray 2. The latest crop of screens show off the usual stuff: ships flying around and explosions. Thankfully, those are just the kind of things we look for in our screenshots.

So, be sure to hit up our gallery below for all of the latest screens.

Ecoris or Ecolis -- either way, the online is multiplayer

To those of you who were less-than-pleased at the idea of a RTS title with a bacteria flavor, it looks like Ecolis is now known as Ecoris. The good news is that the game is still adorable, and it looks like the Wi-Fi capability will in fact be online multiplayer. Now if only someone would explain exactly what the hero, Dorian, is. Jeux-France likens him to a Totoro, but we remain unconvinced. You can ponder his origins while perusing the new images in our updated gallery below.

Ecoris is scheduled for an August release in Japan, and we're crossing our fingers for a localization some time after that.

Another look at Doki Doki Majo Saiban

We've talked at length about SNK's suggestive Doki Doki Majo Saiban before, mostly about the controversy involved in the game. We've discussed the most obvious feature of the game, which is the witch-hunting mode that has players investigating young girls with the touch screen to determine witchery.

Well, we'll focus on the other part of the game today. As self-avowed adventure game freaks, we feel that we should focus on that part of Doki Doki Majo Saiban at least once; we've chosen new screenshots to that effect. We are interested in the adventure aspects of the game. We like SNK, and to be honest, if there's real puzzle solving and item collecting to be found, then we'll actually be interested in Doki Doki Majo Saiban. If it's just a matter of walking from location to location trying to find the right girl to talk to, then we aren't as thrilled. The fact that the main character keeps a log is promising, indicating that there is stuff worth keeping track of.

We've been surprised by DS games before. Remember the comedy game about murder trials? That turned out okay. If the gameplay's there, we might even be able to see past the questionable content. With a C rating, the game shouldn't be too out of control. There's always the chance, too, that the game is actually satirical and pokes fun at the assumed perv audience. The website supports that theory.

Transformers: The screenshots

Two incredible forces. Two sides in the battle for Earth -- and appropriately, two completely different games for two completely different stories. How ... balanced. We love it. As licensed games go, these don't sound (or look) half bad. After the jump, we've got new screens from both Decepticons and Autobots. We won't even make you choose between 'em; you can ogle both if you're so inclined.

Bratz Ponyz screenz cause complex emotionz

It's ... it's not even a Bratz game. It's a Bratz spinoff game. It's more than likely a terrible cash-in game built around a horrible property, presented to little girls in the most insultingly manipulative way possible. It's way beyond the cliche of guys thinking girls' toys are gross; Bratz are just icky and wrong.

Still, somewhere in these Bratz Ponyz, obscured by the corporate-designed horrible character art, we see a mid-90s PC-game/ToeJam & Earl art style peeking out. Seriously, those brightly-colored, cartoony backgrounds would easily be classified as good game art if it weren't for all the Abominationz treading their cloven, chibi hooves all over it. We can't believe what we're saying, but it looks kind of nice. What is happening?

The screens are after the break, in support of the poor artist who got stuck on this project. Chin up, DS-game-artist-guy. You'll get away from the extraneous Z's one day.

We also can't help but point out how the game apparently encourages kids to get "tatooz"-- for their horses.

Lost in Lost in Blue 2 screens

DS-x2 got a hold of some screens for the upcoming sequel to Lost in Blue. What's the most surprising about them is the confirmation that the game will take place on a desert island. We totally didn't see that coming! Now, we never played the first game, so we have no frame of reference on whether to be excited or disappointed at the idea of a sequel, but that's why we have you, fine reader!

Continue past the jump to catch the screens and leave a comment telling us how you feel about a Lost in Blue sequel. What did you love/hate about the first game?

Screenshot Round Up: Tenchu

Rikimaru and Ayame return to quench their thirst for sticky hot blood. From Software released some new shots of the upcoming Tenchu Dark Shadow yesterday. Of the images, a couple are worth special note. The game's stylized stealth-kill scenes seem to have made the transition to the handheld as a couple shots show an unsuspecting enemy getting blasted with what could be a bomb or magical attack on the top screen and the death shown in wonderful detail on the bottom.

The game is going to be WiFi compatible and slated to release next month in Japan.
