I know its an acquired taste and hope Sega doesn't blow it by marketing it as a cutesy kids game.

I've already pre-ordered this. It looks awesome, and I so want it to do well so we will see future installments.
Too many great games from Japan don't get released here because of perceived lack of interest. Please give Shiren a try!

For the record, all the masochism in this post made me uncomfortable.

I'm afraid you'll have no luck making me like Shiren. There, I said it. Why is that? It's because I've been loving Shiren long before fanboy started posting about Shiren. I've been playing the translated SFC rom for some time now, and this little gem is on pre-order. I was more than a little pleased to hear of Shiren leaving Japan for the first time, the closest we've ever really gotten to this was Torneko: The Last Hope on the PSX.
I was quite jealous of Shiren being on the VC in Japan, but that has been a thing of the past since they've certainly made up for it now. There will be a lot of people who dislike this game, even hate it. It's hard to suggest this game to people, many won't have games like NetHack to compare it to, will play it out of context, and will likely get confused and angry. Just say "level reset" and they'll completely ignore the game.
Ah, but I'll be enjoying this one. Cheers for portable dungeon bliss!

I just wish Sega hadn't swapped the gorgeous Japanese cover with an absolutely terrible illustration. It's like they WANT IT TO FAIL. It's mindblowing.
I'm going to print out the Japanese cover and take it with me when I buy the game so I never have to look at the horrid US cover ever again.

I've heard it described as early 90's edginess (like Double Dragon) but it feels so, "We're the Sega marketers and we KNOW what works best to reach those gullible idiots...I mean consumers".

If this is as good as Izuna, or better, then I've basically already bought it. I have the money in my hand, in shiny, plastic card form. All I have to do is go to my favorite website and order it. Gotta see some more before I decide to buy it.

Sure I may just be a FREAK, but this is one of my all-time favorite games! Its so good I've been playing my Japanese version of this game for over a year now...and I don't even speak or read Japanese (so I've relied heavily on free auto web translated Japanese FAQs and a very comprehensive English FAQ on the Japanese SNES game).
It will be great to finally play this game in English so I can actually pickup on all of the NPC dialogs and won't need a FAQ to see what any random item does. The only pisser is having to start from scratch again and redoing all of the main storyline quests and Fei's Puzzles.
