Show and Tell: Mashing it up

Sometimes, you just can't decide which fandom you want to pursue at any given time, especially when we're talking about an occasion like Halloween. There are just too many options! You know you've toyed with ideas like "Its-a me, Sparta Mario," or "Touching Mrs. Tingle." Well, one reader decided to take the mash-up approach to his Halloween costume this year, and he calls the result "Dr. Luigi Myers in Punch-Out!!"

We heartily approve, Oscar. Here's hoping you scored not only compliments, but piles of sugar, if that's what you so desired. Or maybe you were just shooting for laughs. That's admirable as well.

Last-minute costume ideas for hard workers

GamePro Family has posted a collection of game-inspired Halloween costumes, in case you'd like to dress up, but just haven't had the time to make a costume until today. Of course, you'd need to spend pretty much the rest of the day making some of these, but at least you won't have to go to a party as "Off-Duty Police Officer" or "Alien in a You Suit." If you start right now, you still have time to go be a huge nerd in public!

Some of the Nintendo-related suggestions include a Rabbid, Phoenix Wright, and (perhaps easiest) Cooking Mama. Unfortunately, the suggestions don't include suggested methods of costume creation. For something like Cooking Mama, it's obvious (apron, bandana, disapproval), but how do you render Paper Mario in clothing? Maybe sandwich yourself between two large foam/posterboard Mario shapes?

Halloween is serious business at the Pokemon Center

Halloween in Japan is apparently pretty cool, at least in terms of the corporate response. Brian Ashcraft from Kotaku showed off this trick-or-treat bag from the Pokémon Center in Osaka. Of course, it's quite a nice bag, with full-color, completely original Pokémon art covering every surface.

But what's really cool is that the bag is filled with Pokémon-branded candy and treats! We find that kind of dedication impressive. It's also just plain nice of the Pokémon Center to hand this stuff out, even if it is a tactic to bring people in. We imagine that most places would give out a plastic bag or a single piece of candy at most.

DS Daily: Favorite horror game?

Even with Dementium out, there's not much in the way of horror gaming on the DS. In fact, there's just that, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, and, we guess, Touch the Dead. However, since we really wanted to talk about horror gaming today, we think we'll go outside the boundaries of the DS library for today's discussion.

There's a pile of Resident Evil games, of course, and Silent Hills, as well as other survival horror classics like Clock Tower, Fatal Frame, and Siren. Not to mention the House of the Dead series, and its precursors Chiller and Corpse Killer. Castlevania is at least horror-themed, if not all that frightening. From Night Stalker to Phantasmagoria, games have been trying to scare us since the developers realized we could care enough to get scared.

What is your favorite horror game, and why? Is it because of the presentation or the gameplay? In our minds, horror is one of the few genres of gaming in which lackluster control schemes and not-so-great combat are less important than telling a good story and setting atmosphere. Which is why it should be no big surprise that Silent Hill 2 is our favorite game in the genre.

DS Daily: Carvings

Joystiq's pumpkin-carving contest got us inspired -- now we're dying to carve something game-themed into pumpkins of our own. That seems to take some artistic ability, however -- something we're not sure we've got a lot of just lying around. Of course, then we have to decide just what to imprint into the rough orange flesh of our chosen gourd, and that's where things get tough. We could go scary, of course ... but there's just something about the awesomeness of Contra 4 that makes us want to carve some bad dudes into a pumpkin or two.

How about you? Have you ever carved a game-themed pumpkin? If so, what was it? If not, have you considered it? What would you choose?

Dressing up for Halloween is fun, but looking like H.R. Pufnstuf is bittersweet if you can't get in a couple of minutes of Face Training in under the mask between parties. To that end, we'd like you to get creative. What are some possible Halloween costumes into which you could integrate some cleverly concealed DS storage space? If you've already got a costume picked out, how could a DS-able pocket be added to it?

Alternately, should you decide not to bring your DS, the space in question could be filled with candy.

Just in time for Halloween, Atlus has added something to the download section of the Touch Detective 2 1/2 website: masks! Now you can make your own paper representation of one of the game's iconic characters. We can hardly think of anything more unsettling when it comes to cheap Halloween getups. Skip past the jump to see how the masks look in versions far smaller than your face.

However, the masks will probably not be enough to win you one of the prizes in the Atlus Halloween Costume Contest being held on their official forums.

Moustache not included

It'sa me ... sorta! If you're on the lookout for a game-inspired costume this Halloween, we would like to recommend not this costume. Spencer over at Siliconera happened upon this Mario-esque kit while searching for his own costume, and found it lacking. His major problem with the kit is that it's one-size-fits-all, or, in other words, a sack.

That's one of our problems with this item from Leg Avenue (who is, by the way, a lingerie company first and foremost; consider that information when deciding whether it's a good idea to open the link where you are). Our other major issues include the lack of a moustache and the fact that the costume is probably made out of that paper-thin stretchy nylon stuff that most cheap Halloween costumes are made out of, and will therefore look exactly as cool as any other loose Spandex overalls you may have worn in your lifetime. Let us put it this way-- it's going to look worse in real life than it does on the package.

Show and Tell: Zelda week, day three

Maybe we can't all ink our love for Zelda into our flesh, like the folks in yesterday's edition (which has been updated; don't miss the new tats!), but we can wear it in various ways. T-shirts are popular, of course, but we've seen jewelry and more in the past. There is no limit to creativity when it comes to draping our bodies with game gear, which is why today's Show and Tell is dedicated to wearable items of all types. We've got quite a few specimens after the jump -- so check 'em out!

Dementium set to scare up sales on Halloween

The survival horror title from Gamecock and new developer Renegade Kid, Dementium: The Ward, is set for release on Halloween. Spooky! We just hope the game follows up. From the impressions and this spiffy boxart, however, it looks like we may be nightsticking monsters while mowing through the holiday haul this year. If there's two things the DS needs more of, it's violence and horror.

The website has been updated with the new date, which was confirmed via press release this morning.

The above pumpkin, carved by reader graham, hits us in our various weak spots for the most massive damage imaginable. It fills us with the Halloween spirit (if there is even such a thing and if there is, patent pending) and makes us anxious to go out into the living room and give out candy to trick-or-treaters.

What about you guys? Still at that age where you can make off like a bandit in the night, pillow case full of chocolate goods? Or are you too old to pass for young and, like us, must instead sit in your living room, bowl of candy in-hand?
