DS Daily: Let's talk FPS

When we saw the Call of Duty 4 video, we immediately thought about the possibilities for FPS titles on the DS. Sure, we've received a Quake-style title in Metroid Prime Hunters, but the controls cause our hand to cramp up pretty quickly. We never got a chance to check out Brothers in Arms, but other than that, what is there?

Do you think the system can't possibly expect to see a quality FPS title in its future? Do you think Call of Duty 4 could pave the way for future entries in the genre on the handheld?

WRUP: So many games, so little time edition

With so many excellent games having released this week, no doubt many of you are having a tough time deciding on what new game (or games) to pick up, if any. As for us, we picked up a certain puzzle game and are considering joining the front lines, but have nothing else really planned for play in our DS Lite.

What about you, fine reader? Are you going to pick up something new or will you be rocking something a bit older? What are you playing?

Metareview: Brothers in Arms DS

Considering the look of it, Brothers in Arms DS has been a game to watch since the moment it was announced. DS games are forging new 3D ground lately, and with all the rich textures and increased action, we diehards have been busily chewing our nails and wondering just how all these games would play out. Early verdicts are in on Brothers in Arms, and so far, things are looking alright. Print media seems to be scoring the title higher than online reviewers, but that may change as more reviews trickle in.

CVG -- 77%: "The first thing that gets you about Brothers on DS is just how incredible it looks and sounds. Okay, it's not the PC or 360 versions but as far as DS games go, this is up there with the best of them ... Brothers In Arms DS is a good little action-shooter that makes great use of the DS's unique interface. With the tactical aspect of its gameplay removed in favour of a linear action approach, it loses some of its style and identity, but it's nevertheless the first war shooter for DS, and sets a high standard to beat."

Eurogamer -- 60%: "Despite brevity, simplicity, and the slow turning, it's really very exciting to be playing an FPS of this complexity on the DS. The above problems are significant, but never stop the fun of blamming your way through a level, sniping out distant soldiers, or, best of all, explodifying everything in a tank. The story is hugely underwritten, but ultimately unimportant; the motivation, always the need to reach B from A without the Ns shooting you in the face with their Gs ... With some tighter programming, and far fewer invisible barriers and dumb deaths, BiA could have been rather good. As it is - flawed and fun - it's a fantastic signpost."

So what's the word? At this point, it looks like Metroid Prime: Hunters fans need to look no further than Brothers in Arms for a chance to get their shooter on. While the game loses some of what makes the franchise unique, it's a great mark of what's to come -- and anytime a word like "explodifying" comes into play, there may just be something worth checking out.

War Stories trailer hits the trenches

New screens for a game are nice, but video is always better, wouldn't you say? And this video is damn nice. Seriously, we're really excited for Ubisoft's game now, even if the graphics aren't all that great. Shooting down VF rockets, hurling grenades at enemy sandbag enclosures and ducking tanks while running through trenches?! Sign us up!

Check out the video past the break.

Duck and cover, new BIA screens are coming right for us

Some fresh screens for Brothers in Arms have emerged from the trenches, dirty and tired from battling evil dictators abroad, but now they may finally rest. They're home in the loving eyes of fanboys alike. And, these screens offer some more variety than the previous ones on offer, allowing us to get a peek at different aspects of play, which makes us more excited for the title than when it was first announced.

Head on past the post break for the other screens.

Brothers in Arms screens split the duty

If you've been keeping up with the march of news about a certain squad-based FPS franchise hitting the DS, then you might know that the game was recently confirmed to have vehicles for player use. Old news, right? Well, it still is, but at least we have more screens from Ubisoft to look at. Never hurts, right?

Kiffnews dishes up 4 fresh screens, with a pair each presenting foot-based and vehicle-based action for the upcoming title, which we've gone ahead and embedded past the post break.

New Brothers in Arms shots

DS games are looking pretty hot lately, but Brothers in Arms is just so gorgeous that we can't help but wonder what the catch is ... like maybe it will give us cancer or completely suck or something. Probably not, but we'll be keeping an eye out for anything that could cause lasting harm, either physical or emotional.

While you ponder our weird paranoias, check out the screens. They're after the jump.

Photoshop + bad scans = Brothers in Arms screenshots

The scans we had for you yesterday of images from Brothers in Arms look like they got a clean-up job, because they now almost resemble actual screenshots. Well, screenshots rendered by a pointilist, perhaps, but at least we can get a good idea of how the game will look. It's much more impressive this way!

Check out the two other screens after the jump.

Latest Nintendo Power confirms Brothers in Arms coming to DS

Jeux-France got ahold of the latest issue of Nintendo Power, which confirms that Brothers in Arms is headed to the DS. We couldn't be happier, as the Brothers in Arms franchise is one of the very few WWII-based series of games left that are worth playing. The images of the game (which have been embedded past the post break) are of very low quality, so we cannot discern whether the graphics are something to be excited about or not.

We can confirm, however, that the game is to feature 3 different campaigns, spanning 16 missions and several of the countries involved in the war. The touch-screen will be used for switching weapons, tossing grenades (player must draw a line for trajectory) and aiming at enemies. The top screen is obviously going to be used to present the action.

No word on whether this title is to be Wi-Fi Connect compatible or not.

[Thanks, Ken!]
